New Zealand Completed Requests / Sarah Holmes/Clark born 1877 NSW Australia
« on: Monday 13 June 11 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I can't find my GG Auntie Sarah who was born at Tumut in New South Wales in 1877. An elderly relative told me that her mother told her that Sarah had left for New Zealand in the very early 1900's.

Sarah's mothers name was Jane Elizabeth Wood, whose first husband was William Holmes, it is likely that Sarah used the name Holmes as her father was actually a Chinese Doctor by the name of Joseph Lim Sue. Sarah's older brother used the name Holmes rather than Lim Sue.

It is also possible that Sarah used the name Clarke as her mother seems to have married a Harry Clarke after the Chinese husband disappeared between 1877-83.

I am not having any luck searching your records at the moment, can anyone come up with anything?

Australia / Digger's Bible
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
There was an article in our local newpaper, The Border Mail last week about a man whose daughter found an old bible in a box of books.
An inscription inside reads 'To R McDonald on his departure to the Front, wishing him a safe return, from the officers and soldiers of the Salvation Army Kiama'. Dated December 3. 1915.

The article mentions that Richard McDonald was killed  in action July 26, 1916.

On looking at this Richard McDonald's records, he enlisted in Dec 1915, no next of kin, but left his will in favour of Miss A M Morrow, who later asked for a photo of his grave in France.

Unfortunately I can't contact the man who has the bible as no contact details were given in the paper and the reporter has not kept his phone number. I wondered if we could find anything and I would write a letter to the editor to contact this man again.

Australia / South Australia before 1842?
« on: Thursday 21 April 11 01:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Are there any South Australian records before 1842? Looking for details on Elizabeth Moore, born Devon around 1817, arrived in SA Supposedly aged 16, so early 1830's.
She married John Chanter in 1842, as Betsey Parsons, one of her children's birth certificates show her as Elizabeth Chanter, late Parsons, nee Moore.
The marriage record does not list her parents. I am guessing that she possibly arrived in SA then married Parsons who died pre 1842. I suppose I could order the marriage cert and see if it gives any details of her previous marriage.
I have all details of her family with John Chanter and her death so I don't need anything after 1842.

Devon / Elizabeth MOORE birth c. 1817 Rose Ash, Devon
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 03:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I need some help, Elizabeth married John Chanter in South Australia in 1842, she must have been a widow as her name was BetseyParsons. Her children's birth certificates and death certificate show her as born in Devonshire, she is named as Elizabeth Chanter, late Parsons, nee Moore. No parents names are given.
She possibly married a Parsons in Devon before travelling to Australia, our South Australian records only go back to 1842, so I cannot find a death for him.
Can anyone find a birth at Rose Ash, or a marriage of Elizabeth Moore to Parsons please.

Australia / Henry ANDERSON died Moree 1917.
« on: Monday 11 April 11 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Is there anyone near Moree who can help find out anything about Henry's death please?

Death certificate says date of death about 12th September 1917, funeral 16th Sep. Death by drowining, there seems to have been some confusion over whose body it was, as entries were changed in the register. Originally supposed to be Peter Hansen, alias Augustine Peters, alias Frederick Schmidt.
Henry was a clerk in general store, his second wife Alice Quade nee Shepherd was the informant.

I couldn't find anything on Trove, I was wondering if there was an inquest or anything in the local papers.

Devon / John CHANTER Bideford
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 06:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find any more information about the family of John Chanter and Frances Andrews who married at Bideford in 1803.

Their son John, born 1815 came to Australia and fathered a large family, outliving three wives, having married Ann Dennis in 1838 at Bideford.

I have found Frances, a widow at Potters Lane Bideford in 1841 and 1851, she has daughters Elizabeth and Frances, Frances senior dies in 1854 and the daughter Frances stays on in Potters lane with her husband Henry Bowden.

I can't find a death for John Chanter senior before 1841, nor can I find any other births to this couple, given that they married in 1803, I would think there would have been others born before 1815.

John senior is listed as a 'Maltster'? on John's marriage certificate to his third wife. Would he have been working in a brewery, is that the correct spelling.

Any help would be appreciated.

Northumberland / William Anderson born 1823 Horncliffe.
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find some record of the birth of my GG Grandfather William Anderson born around 1823 in Horncliffe, Northumberland.
He married Margaret Scott in 1848 in Durham, his father's name was given as James, occupation 'Pitman'.
In 1851 they are living in Durham St Giles, with two children, William's place of birth is Northumberland and William is a coalminer.

William sails to Australia in 1857 and Margaret later joins him. Their son Thomas is born in Australia in1864 and Williams place of birth is given as Horncliffe Scotland, his occupation is 'Miner'.

Williams death in 1910 gives no record of his parents names.

I have tried FreeReg and Family Search but cannot come up with anything, nor can I find a definite 1841 census record for William.

Any help would be appreciated.

Australia / William HOLMES "Marquis of Huntley" 1835
« on: Tuesday 11 January 11 08:32 GMT (UK)  »
HI,
I am trying to eliminate one by one the convicts named William Holmes who arrived in Australia between 1825-1850 ish.
A few of the Tasmanian ones I have managed to take off the list but I cant find any information on William who arrived aboard the "Marquis of Huntley" in 1835.

I can find his transportation register on ancestry but cant find anything else, he was tried at Lincoln, Lincolnshire in 1834.

I would like to find any more I can, like Pardon, ticket of leave, application to marry or death to rule him out as my GG Grandfather who married Jane Elizabeth Wood in 1853 in NSW.

My GG grandfathers death certificate [1875 NSW] says he was born in Norfolk, England around 1819, he was a carpenter and could not read or write. His age varies by about 5 years from his marriage certificate and the childrens birth certificates.
Any help would be appreciated.

Australia / Joan HOLMES Tumbarumba
« on: Monday 03 January 11 03:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a photo taken in 1930 of Joan Holmes in the Tumbarumba Band, she looks to be around her early teens. I would love to be able to find out who she is/was as there looks to be a family resemblance and until I can find her birth I cant link her into the family.
