Family History Beginners Board / Re: Childbirth in the 1800's

But did they call the child their own, or was it acknowledged as a grandchild? I've seen plenty of instances in the census where a grandchild has been brought up by granparents whilst the child's parents were elsewhere, sometimes with other children, but the true relationship was acknowledged.

I know of two instances in my own family where an illegitemate child was brought up by the Grandparents as their own. Only family gossip tells us that they were in fact the daughters child, probably never acknowledged as such at the time though.

Hi Velma and Jox,
This is one that almost slipped by me, I too am interested in the surname Balcombe, in fact I believe that I may be one of the cousins mentioned above, I cannot add to what Jox has already said, but will gladly help if I can.

Will watch this space with interest.

David.
Hi David, I notice you are interested in Balcombe in sussex. My GG Grandfather was thomas Balcombe from Laughton Sussex. I am interested in finding more information on his father Richard 1769, his father was John 1741, who was married to Mary Pollard. Also interested in Thomas Balcombe 1765 and William 1770, I think they may be connected.

Thanks Kerry,
I have looked through the family search website and managed to find a few extra marriages for children of the people I am looking for. I think the records that I am after have not been transcribed and are not available on the internet.
If anyone finds any Balcombes while looking for their own ancestors I would appreciate the information.

Re balcombes in sussex.
Dont rule out Ticehurst, I just found on Family Search that William Balcombe 1799 was born in ticehurst.
He married my GG Grandfather's sister Mary Balcombe 1800 who was born in Laughton, I'm guessing that these two may have been cousins.

Hi Kerry,
I dont know much at all about William and Sarah, my suspician is that william may have been a brother or cousin of Richard 1769 from Laughton Sussex. Perhaps he was born in Sussex, I will chick again on my Ancestry tree to see if there is any more.

Thomas Balcombe born 1816 in Laughton Sussex, transported to Australia in 1842. His parents were Richard Balcombe 1769 and Harriett Ford who was Richard's second wife.

Richard's paents were John Balcombe 1741 and Mary Pollard 1744, married in Buxstead.

The other convict of interest is George Melancthon Balcombe 1815- 1888 who was transported to Australia in 1837 aboard the "Mangles " from Surrey. His parents were James Balcombe 1791 and Mary Buckland. James parents william Balcombe 1770 and Sarah.

Hi Chris

Did the lady make any indication of which area in Sussex?  I can find Bolcomb in Ticehurst but none of the dates match  :-\

Kerry
the area I am interested in is around Laughton, my GG Grandfather Thomas Balcombe was born there in 1816 and transported to Australia as a convict. Marriage and Babtism records were found in the Jireh Chappel in Lewes. I now want to find his fathers siblings or cousins to see if there is any connection between two families of Balcombes who came to Australia.
