The Lighter Side / On This Day in MARCH ... our ancestral BMDs.
« on: Thursday 28 February 13 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
Lydart has just reminded me that a new month is upon us so, from tomorrow, 1st March, this is the thread for all your family anniversaries and stories.

Several of us have been joining in for the past few months. It gives us a chance to remember our  family members and to tell what we know about them but it has also given some of us the push we needed to dig a little deeper, to send for that certificate we've been meaning to buy but kept putting off and to do some tidying up of our records.

Everyone is welcome so we look forward to hearing your March stories. :)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Please can you date this for me?
« on: Saturday 16 February 13 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I posted this photograph some years ago in Nairnshire, confidently stating that it was taken in Nairn and asking for family information. I have now been told by two RCers that it most definitely isn't Nairn at all!

I need to establish roughly when it was taken so that I can try to work out where my great grandfather might have been living at the time. He spent most of his adult life in Nairn, with a brief spell in Aberdeen.

According to family legend, this photograph is of him with his Nairn pals, so if it isn't taken in that town, where on earth is it?

So an approximate date would be really helpful.

Thanks. :)

Hello,

I think these photographs are of my great grandparents - born 1871, married 1895. There isn't a lot of detail to go on but is it possible to date them?

I have received them by email and have no idea whether there is anything written on the back, though I have asked - I suspect they haven't been removed from the frames for a long time and they look pretty mildewed.

Thanks. :)

Essex / Help needed in finding newspaper/inquest report
« on: Friday 18 January 13 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Just for a change, the latest death certificate to arrive wasn't describing a Howe suicide or mental breakdown. This time it is a simple case of drowning.

I have been searching for a report on the death of Benjamin Howe, from Brightlingsea who drowned on September 30th 1869, when the boat Eliza Jane was upset by a gust of wind, off Harwich Harbour.

The inquest was held on October 12th and the coroner for Essex, Maldon, was Mr W. Codd. I feel sure the incident, or the inquest must have been reported somewhere.

If anyone is more adept at searching newspaper archives than I am, I'd really appreciate some help with this.

Many thanks,

Jen :)

Essex / A new year and a new attempt on my Howe family.
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

It's that time when I think I must get to grips with some of the sticking points in my tree and to see if anyone can help me to unstick them.

To go back to the beginning:

My earliest known Howe is my 5 x great grandfather Benjamin, probably born somewhere around 1760. He married Mary Turner in Tillingham in 1783. I can find no trace of him before his marriage. Mary Turner's family was Tillingham based.

What I know is that for the next five generations, all eldest sons were called Benjamin and many second sons were Samuel.

So my line goes:
                    5 xggf: Benjamin Howe ( c 1760)
                    4 xggf: Samuel Howe (1790 Tillingham - 1861 Tollesbury)
                    3 xggf: Benjamin Howe (1813 Tollesbury - 1869 Brightlingsea)
                    2 xggf: Benjamin Howe ( 1837 - 1892 Brightlingsea)
ggf: Clarence Samuel ( 1865 Brightlingsea - 1932 Aberdeen) - His elder brother was Benjamin but it seems he was ostracised by his family because my ggf was known to the family as Ben and his elder brother wasn't known about by my family until I started researching! In true family tradition though, his own eldest son was Benjamin - as was Clarence's.

In searching through the burial index for Essex, I have found evidence of another Benjamin, born around 1790, died 1869 in Burnham on Crouch. Census entries have him born in Althorne. He doesn't seem to fit into my tree anywhere but his name leads me to think that he might! Married to a Hannah but no maiden name for her.

Having given you the background, my question is about the origins of my earliest Benjamin - born c1760. Can anyone find any mention or trace of his birth or any other information which might help me to go further back on this line. I can't find any evidence of a will, land documents, a burial or anything at all to help pin him down but I know how clever my fellow chatters are so I am pinning great hopes on you.

Many thanks for reading this,

Jen :)

Technical Help / Converting vinyl LPs to cd or MP3 - Completed, Thanks
« on: Friday 23 November 12 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
Can I ask this in here?

I am thinking of buying one of those converter thingies to make our vinyl albums playable again.

Does anyone have any experience of this and if so, could you give me any advice, please?

This is a for gift and I don't have limitless funds so if it is going to cost silly money, I shall have to abandon the idea. There are two on A****n at the moment but I have no idea if they are good, bad or indifferent! ???

Thanks,

Jen :)
