The Common Room / Re: Current Paternity Rights to his surname
« on: Wednesday 05 January 05 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure about modern birth certificates but of all of the birth certificates that I have for my ancestors none of them have a column for the child's surname. The one birth cert that I have where the mother and father have a different surname was indexed in the GRO index under both surnames and there was no way of knowing which name the child used. This was in 1857.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Adult baptisms?
« on: Monday 03 January 05 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Jenni,
The parish records for Little Thurlow should be with the Suffolk County Record Office. This is either in Gatacre Road Ipswich (01473 264541  ?) or Raingate Street, Bury St Edmunds ( 01284 763141  ?). A phone call should enable you to find out which of these hold the records. The phone numbers were ok but could now be out of date. Try them.

The parish records will be on fiche now but some years ago I went to Huntingdon CRO and was allowed to look through the original parish register for one parish. It was a huge book with vellum type pages and went back to the 1600s. It was lovely to handle such an old document but I'm sure that I should not really have been allowed to, at least not without gloves.

Buckinghamshire / Re: Surname Interests...Bird/Norris/Cox

Sarah,
I am glad that you have made contact. It is really wierd that you also have Butlers in you tree. I wonder if your John Butler was a brother of my William Butler?
My own brother lives close to Ibstone Common and he tells me that it is a tiny place and so I guess it must have been small in the 1860s.
I shall spend some time looking at your information and mine to see if I can find a link. As you say, there is a good chance of a link somewhere there. In the new year I would like to get to the Bucks CRO at Aylesbury to look at the Parish resisters to see what they reveal.
I do not know which village my Ann Bird was born in. I only have the GRO ref of Thame but that covers several surrounding villages. I need to get her birth cert to find out. I shall send for that when I have spare cash but I have several other certs to send for that are also vital!!

I shall keep in touch.

Happy Christmas   --   Peter

Marie,
The parish records for Marylebone will be held at the LMA. The problem is that there will be more than 1 parish church in Marylebone at that time. When I went to the LMA to look for baptisms in the Marylebone and Paddington areas it was extremely difficult to find the right parish.
I need to look for more baptisms myself in this area but I shall not be going to London  until sometime next year. It will be far too crowded at the moment for a country boy like me. Perhaps someone who lives in London can help you.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Completed Census Requests / 1851 census lookup for Brighton
« on: Thursday 16 December 04 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all

Is anyone able to help me with a census lookup for Brighton in 1851?

The family are:-
William Tanner  age 42 blacksmith born Rotherfield, Sussex
Mary Tanner age 42 born Eastbourne, Sussex
Eliza Tanner age 18 milliner  born Brighton
John Stephen Tanner age 16  tailor  born Brighton
Jane Mariah Tanner age 14  born brighton
Sarah Ruth Tanner  age 10 born Brighton

These names and dates are taken from the 1861 census for 41 Over Street Brighton.
I have  looked for this address in the 1851 census when I was at the FRC in London but could not find No 41.
I know that the family were at this address in September 1852.
There may also be other children older than Eliza.

Thanks   -   Peter

Occupation Interests / Re: What is the most interesting occupation in you family tree?
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
My wife has a rellie who had 11 children. We looked up their baptisms in the parish records. For the first 9 kids the rellie was noted as an Ag lab. But for child 10 he was a bailiff. Yippee we thought, the fellow has got promoted, gone up in the world. But, alas, his rise was shortlived; two years later he was back to an ag lab for the baptism of child 11.  Nice try.   :(
