Some people can be strange.
I sent a CWGC ww1 memorial certificate of a cousin's grandfather's death in ww1 to the cousin via his mother. I havn't heard a peep from either of them.

I expect that many of you have found a "new" living rellie who was previously unknown to you.
If you have then made contact with them, what sort of response have you had? Anyone been rebuffed?

Thanks Hack. And of course your method reduces the time to get the certificate by eliminating a couple of days for postage to Southport.

When I was a kid I was always threatened that I would be given boots to wear if I wore out my shoes too quickly. We are talking about heavy black industrial boots.

I have just found a 1901 census which records one of mine as being a scavenger (in London).   Well I'm proud of him and I expect him mum was too.

Hackstaple,
The £7 fee for a BMD certificate is if you order from GRO on-line. If you order by post with an index reference the fee is £8.50. I order by post because I don't do credit cards. Old fashioned see!

Jenny,
There is a website called Lost London Streets which may help you. This is the address. http://members.aol.com/WHall95037/londons.html

I note what you say about getting certificates from the local registrar. It is certainly cheaper and probably quicker, but when I have tried for some areas in London eg Paddington, Kensington then I have had no success.  Marriage certificates are filed under the particular church in which the marriage occurred and of course one does not usually know this until the certificate is obtained. Secondly, some districts cannot supply certificates from prior to say 1901 and another cannot supply them at all (asbestos in the archive).  And of course most of my people were in these areas. So I just shell out £8.50 to the GRO.
