annecaroline,
Many many thanks for your post of 14 Apr with kind acknowledgement and the death notice which clinches it!
I don't know how you found it but it is brilliant!

regross,
Many many thanks for your kind acknowledgement of 14 Apr.

I didn't respond immediately to either of your posts as I was expecting a response (excited?) from genefinder.

genefinder,
You didn't respond to my questions of 14 Apr but it's pleasing to see that you have now (17 Apr) seen the information provided on the thread.

It would, I'm sure, be of interest to all of us who have done our best to help you on this thread if you were to post the information when you get the death cert (though there's surely no doubt that it is "your" Alice Maude).

Kindest regards to all,

JAP

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Elizabeth Sevier, Cifton

Hi All,

Just a quick post to suggest to anyone reading this thread (with its very general original request) that - in the interests of avoiding duplication - it could help first to read the (now locked) thread mentioned earlier, namely:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,375613

Although that thread is on the Deciphering Help board and concerns such a request, it also has
- additional census references
- some information about Elizabeth's father, John Ford SEVIER of Maisemore Lodge, Maisemore, Gloucestershire
- information about Elizabeth's marriage and death.

And, for completeness, also the following thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,295312

Replies #3 and #5 in that thread by 'osprey' have information including census references for Elizabeth after her marriage (1867), her husband and their children.
There is also mention on that thread that the husband, Daniel George DAVIES, was minister of Dixton, Monmouthshire in 1881 but that a new incumbent took over in 1885.  And that Daniel was Rector of Shirenewton, Monmouthshire from 1884.
I see that a new incumbent was appointed there in 1891
(refer http://shirenewtonchurch.info/church/history.html )

Kind regards,

JAP

Hi All,

It's a relief to see that nothing in my post at reply #10 above duplicates anything on this or the other thread.  :D

StephEv, I hope that my snippets are of interest.

Do you have further queries?

Kindest Regards,

JAP

Hi Sisterjane,

A couple of snippets re John Ford SEVIER, Esq.

See:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Maisemore/Kelly1861.html
An extract from Kelly's Directory of Gloucestershire, 1861 re Maisemore includes the following:
" ...  Maisemore lodge, the seat of J, Ford Sevier, Esq., stands on an elevation, commanding a fine prospect over the Severn. ..."

In 1851, John Ford SEVIER and his wife Elizabeth seem to have been in Chichester, Sussex.
Written as SCIRER, transcribed as TCIRER.
HO107/1653/338/18
Guildhall St, Chichester, Sussex
John F SCIRER, Visitor, Married, 52, Proprietor of Land, b Bristol
Elizabeth do, Visitor, Married, 43, b Bristol
plus another Visitor and two servants.

From FreeBMD, it seems that John Ford SEVIER died in 1871.
SEVIER, John Ford, Death, age 77, March quarter 1871, Gloucester, Volume 6a, Page 187
He must have died before the census as Elizabeth SEVIER is still at the Lodge, a widow, in 1871.

J Ford SEVIER had the advowson (right of appointment of the minister) of the parish of Staunton in Worcestershire from ca 1861; Mrs SEVIER sold it ca 1875.

The Common Room / Re: nancy
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 02:35 BST (UK)  »
In Scotland also, it was used interchangeably with Agnes.

One well-known Agnes/Nancy was Mrs Agnes or Nancy MCLEHOSE who was said to be the inspiration for Robert BURNS's poem 'Ae Fond Kiss'; see:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/robertburns/works/ae_fond_kiss/

A glance at the IGI using common surnames shows Nancy being used as a name in its own right in fairly early records.  Here are some examples:
Nancy TAYLOR bap 16 Dec 1733, Lydney, Gloucester, England
Nancy SMITH b 17 Feb, bap 18 Mar 1736, St Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England
Nancy WILLIAMS bap 29 Jul 1744, Powick, Worcester, England
Nancy BROWN bap 11 Apr 1748, Bolstone, Hereford, England
Nancy BROWN bap 10 Jul 1766, Durrisdeer, Dumfries, Scotland

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with reading OPR entry
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi JimR,

Just chanced upon this thread.

To my eyes it's unquestionably incerti patris (as Lambendsor says and before I read the the thread) i.e. uncertain father.
Hope so anyway.

One wonders whether Barbara didn't actually know which of her 'friends' might have been the Dad or whether she was just very loyal so that the Dad of her little boy wouldn't get into trouble!

All the best,

JAP

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Lance / Cole Surname Bristol Help Needed!!
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 13:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi heywood,

Have fun in computer detox!

Love your idea of the meaning of my initials!

I'd noticed, but hadn't mentioned, Fanny INKS bap 1778 Harlington Bedford.
Might be relevant, might not.
So easy to believe that "our" Frances/Fanny (whatever maiden surname) doesn't appear at all in the IGI.

The trouble is that so many events were never recorded in OPRs and so many OPRs never made it into the IGI.  Not to mention that many parents didn't have all of their children baptized ...

Potters did indeed move around as clay for pottery was exhausted at the locations of their original potteries ...

And even if that wasn't the reason, perhaps many potters in a single family couldn't be supported at one particular clay location so had to venture elsewhere and start up new potteries.

I hope there's an answer to whether Thomas actually ever signed his middle name as Henry.

All the very best,

JAP
