I am hoping something can be done with this photo. It is the only known photo in existence of my great uncle but it is dreadfully damaged with a crack straight through his face and the addition of sticky tape as well. I hope the resolution if fine as it is a scan sent to me by a relative.

Hoping for some magic

Thanks for your input Shane,

Unfortunately I know neither the exact parish the family came from in Kilkenny nor Eleanor's maiden name. Unfortunately none of the births of her children born in Tasmania were registered. Marriages for her children were before parental information was included on certificates and death records for married children in Tasmania do not include the parents names so really no way of telling what Eleanor's maiden name was.

Yes I am a member of RootsIreland and have not had any success there as yet.

Kilkenny / Byrn / Byrne family 1840s

Hi all,

I am hoping someone may be able to help break down my brick wall.

My Byrne family consisting of John and wife Eleanor (also known as Ellen) plus children Mary, James and Catherine arrived in Tasmania Australia in 1854. Each of the family members are listed as being born in Kilkenny Ireland. Ages stated are John 35 (although could be 25), Eleanor 29, Mary 10, James 3 and Catherine 1. Mary's age also may not be quite correct as she married in 1862 at the age of 15 years.
Unfortunately the shipping document does not give more information as to where in Kilkenny they were from.

I am hoping the combination of names and ages may single them out in maybe Catholic baptism, marriages or such records. I have attempted to research them online with no luck.

Further to my query.

I have done as Ken suggested resulting in 7 pages of army records for John Bishop.

In fact he enlisted 4th June 1884 in the Suffolk Regiment and transferred to the Grenadier Guards 16th Feb 1886, transferred to reserves 4th June 1891 and was discharged 3rd June 1896.

Wow what a find.  His transfer to reserves must be in conjunction with him joining the police force.
Does this work anything like the army reserves here in Australia?

Of course I have an idea what the dress is now for the Grenadier Guards but can someone enlighten me as to the dress for both the Suffolk Regiment and the Grenadier Guards at the time my great grandfather served with them?

I have just received a copy of my great grandparent's marriage certificate dated 20th February 1889 Kensington England. My great grandfather is listed as living at "S Margaret's Parish Westminster" and his profession is given as "Private Grenadier Guards".

This is the first I have know of his enlistment in the guards. I had know of him as being a constable in the Coates Police force from approx October 1891 to his death in April 1904 at the age of 37 leaving a young family.

I have not found John on the 1891 Census but have found his new wife working for a family in Cornwall and their son residing with his grandparents in Cornwall.

I am hoping someone can tell me how I find more about his time with the Grenadier Guards.

Hi again,

I am hoping with the success of my last photo that maybe someone will be able to clean up this photo sent to me of my great grandmother's brother. He was a returned Boer War veteran. It would be lovely to return his photo to it's former glory.

Hi all,

Thank you so much for your help with my print.

Yes Cazza59 the beading work if fantastic and the material of the dress looks like satin.

Thanks saddles and mozza29 for your versions.

I tend to agree with you skippy2 that she would be in her 60s.

The only thing now is to find out who she is. The possible name is Cal which I wonder what that would be a shortening for or whether it is a nickname as quite a few younger members of this family were known by various nicknames.

Once again thank you all for your wonderful restorations. The addition of colour brings a whole new dimension to the print.

I am quite new to the list and often have marveled at the results I have seen.
