Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Please give this lady back her eye
« on: Thursday 24 September 09 02:37 BST (UK)  »
I received this photo from a relative. I do not have a name for her yet.
The photo is taken in St Austell, Cornwall.

Unfortunately this is the only photo of her and she is missing an eye.
Could someone help her?

I am told it is taken about 1916. Would you agree?

What age do you think she is?

Thanks once again "atom12" for your indepth knowledge. Being an Australian I know very little regarding England especially in relation to military. I am still trying to find out more regarding the First Life Guards that my grandfather was part of. Although as a child I knew what a First Life Guard looked like I never learnt what they did (in peace and at war) or how someone got to be one.

My soldier is a bit confusing all round. It is quite odd that he would be wearing part of each uniform. It may be that only he knows the answer as to why.

I am currently tracking down records for my grandfather at the Cavalry museum in the hope they may be able to answer where he served etc. I will contact the Highlanders Regimental Museum in the chance they may be able to suggest a plan of attack in relation to the unknown soldier. Without a name it is it may be impossible. You never know, something might turn up one day.

This and the other unnamed photos I have are a lesson to all of us to label our own photos so that in the future our decendants know who is who.

Thanks DMR

Hello again all,

Thank you for your responses.

I am a bit confused. Am I correct that this person is a Lovat Scout or a Seaforth Highlander or is a Lovat Scout connected to the Seaforth Highlanders?

I would like to know if you think "atom12" might be correct with the timing of the uniform. If it is a pre WW1 uniform? Then is it the Boer war that I am looking for and how do I find any of those records? Should I move my post to a more appropriate spot then on this forum? If so, where & how?

Does any detail of the uniform suggest a rank?

Unfortunately "DavidGreenall110" there is not any details on the back except to note that is a postcard. No studio name, no hand writing and no distinguishing marks. Someone has unfortunately trimmed the photo both top and bottom with scissors and may have cut away the details on the very edges.  :(

I appreciate both "mmm45" and "DavidGreenall110" comments regarding men enlisting from say Lincolnshire or Yorkshire into Scottish regiments. It makes it more feasible that someone in the family may have joined. The face just nags at me with some familiarity. I like the comment about the reasons to join Kilted Scots Regiments such as the "liked the uniform and wanted to stand out". I would have thought it would be a bit cold for wanting to wear a kilt.

Any idea how old you all think the man is? I am thinking not a very young soldier.

The John Edward Crow that I thought it might be was born 1865 and married 1889. I have two photos of his wife now identified in the collection of photos. Each photo is a studio portrait taken as christenings of what we think to be the two eldest children. There must be a photo of him in there somewhere but others don't seem to fit either for age or location of photographer. Unfortunately the studio backdrop is not the same so it may indeed not be him but maybe another connection (relative or friend).

Yes David there is a William Crow (John Edward's brother) but no Andrew and James. Thompson is such a common name and I have two lines of them in the family. My genealogy program is down at the moment but when I get it up and running I will list the Thompson's. He may in fact be one of (John Edward Crow's wife) Ede Thompson's brothers.

Thanks again all. It seems my soldier it a bit of a tricky one.

Thanks "old rowley", "DavidGreenall110" and "atom12" for your responses.

Am I correct that the Lovat Scouts were part of the Seaforth Highlanders?
Would the men in the Scouts only be from Scotland?
(The photo is of similarity to my ancestors in looks but I cannot find anyone born in Scotland at all let alone around this time frame)

Would Englishmen also have joined a Scottish regiment? (I have heard of Australians that joined the British army in WW1)

One of the articles online regarding the Lovat Scouts did mention their involvement in protecting the coast and being at Grimsby at one time.
My great grandmother "Ede Thompson" was born at Grimsby so this may be a key.
The timeframe suggests the gentleman might be Ede's husband "John Edward Crow" or one of her brothers.

Any ideas how I could check for known family names being enlisted.

Sorry for the delay with my response. My computer has had a bit of trouble but is on the mend now.

Thanks from Australia

World War One / Unknown soldier & uniform
« on: Monday 10 August 09 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi again,

I am needing a bit of help with this photo. It is amongst my grandparent's photos but so far I do not have a name for the person nor a regiment.

Can anyone give me a lead.

Excuse my ignorance. As the subject is wearing a kilt. Is it a Scottish regiment as I have a yet not found a link to Scotland.

Is this a WW1 photo?
What regiment is the uniform?
Where might the photo have been taken?

Only family members I have found to be in the army during WW1 so far are my grandfather who was in the First Life Guards and his brother which I posted earlier suggested to be a gunner in the Royal Artilery.

Hoping for some thoughts.

Hi genechaser,

Thank you for the response on my great uncle's uniform. Hopefully it will help me locate his records. I will try for his medal card first.

Thanks also for the clean up of the photo. He was a bit grubby.

I have only found out who was in the photo in the last couple of days.

Thanks once again.

World War One / WW1 Uniform Identification

Hi all,

I have just discovered this photo is that of my grandfather's brother and wondered if anyone could identify the uniform for me. The buttons are quite clear and have a crown above a canon.

As I am from Australia I have little knowledge of the various regiments in England during WW1.

Thank you Shane for your reply. Sorry I have been a bit long winded in acknowledging your contribution.

At this stage I do not know a lot more that may be of help.

The shipping list for the Maitland says that John Byrn was a "farm? labourer" (the writing is cramped but the word appears to start with f and finish with m).
Eleanor is listed as a "dairy maid"

John went to work for John Connell at Campbell Town in Tasmania as a farm labourer for a period of 6 months as listed on the "Register of Hiring or Disposal of Immigrants for the Maitland". John Connell was known to help fellow Irish including some of the political rebels during their time in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania).

John Byrn died on 24th Aug 1880. The death notice in the Tasmanian paper states he was a native of Kilkenny Ireland and could American papers please copy. I do not know if family went to America from Ireland. It does not appear that family went from Tasmania at this stage.

On leaving the employment of John Connell the family set up business in the sale of liquor. John was listed as a victulator and Ellen ran the Forest Hotel at a town named Tunnack in Tasmania where John died.

Thank you for the other suggestions for contact. I will see what I come up with.

Does anyone know if there would be information available at the Portsmouth departure point of the Maitland.

Thanks once again

Dawn

Hi Kris,

Thanks for you offer to look up Mary's death notice in the papers. I would appreciate that if it is not too much trouble.

It is such a pity for us trying to find our relatives that there is not some kind of permanent memorial. I can understand families wishes though when the cemetery costs are so high and the tenure so short.

Mary's brothers were in a brick wall in a very large cemetery with little need to conserve space as yet but the walls were to be demolished. Family could pay for remains to be held in perpetuity. Which of course would be at substantial cost.
