Yorkshire (West Riding) / Three Joseph Sandfords in Wooldale
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have three Joseph Sandfords :

Joseph and Hannah with their children Samuel (b 1807) and Tedbar (b 1811) living at Wooldale, then Cartworth.

Joseph (wife unknown) with his son William (b1822) living at Wooldale.

Joseph (wife unknown) with his son Nathan (b 1824) living at Wooldale

I have been trying to determine if at least two are one and the same Joseph but there is nothing on the IGI. Wooldale is on the Kirkburton side of the river so does anyone have access to records from Kirkburton to try and resolve this.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1901 census look up please
« on: Saturday 26 February 11 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following family living at 67 Spring Close Street, Leeds in the 1891 census;

Joseph Scargill, 52, Coal Miner, born Emley
Sarah (wife), 51, born Emley
Minnie (dau), 11, born Leeds

I have found Joseph (63) and Sarah (62) living at the same address in 1901; but no Minnie.

From FreeBMD I can find no death of Minnie registered or a marriage in WRY. However, there is a marriage of a Minnie Scargill in the December quarter of 1910 but this is in Sculcoates in the East Riding.

There are numerous transcription errors for the name Scargill in the censuses but could someone please look to see if they can find Minnie in 1901.

Thank you.

Luke Noble married Hannah Kilner at Elland on 28 Jun 1848.

Luke gives his age as 32 in 1851, 42 in 1861, 52 in 1871, 64 in 1881 and 74 in 1891.

According to the marriage record on familysearch, Luke gives his father as Thomas Garside and states he is a widower.

There is a baptism of a Luke Noble at Elland on 6 Oct 1816; mother Betty Noble, a spinster. There is also a baptism a Luke Noble at Elland on 3 Oct 1819; parents Luke Noble and Martha.

There is a marriage of a Luke Noble to Rachel Hayes at Elland on 15 Aug 1842 with his father given as Luke. I presume this is not the Luke that married Hannah Kilner in 1848; he must be the son of Betty

First of all, can anyone find a Luke Noble in the 1841 census.

I must also be missing the first marriage of the Luke Noble, son of Betty so any suggestions welcome please.

I also 'lose' one of Luke and Hannah's children and another of their children's husband later on but I'll post if we can resolve the correct Luke.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Joah Marsden 1891 census look up please
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Joah - I presume Joe in the best Yorkshire - Marsden married Ellen Sykes at Batley in 1861.

In 1881 they are living at High Street, Batley:

Joah aged 43, born in Kirkburton, a cloth dresser.
Ellen aged 39, born in Dewsbury.
Lydia aged 14, born in Batley Carr.
Elizabeth aged 13, born in Dewsbury.
John William aged 9, born in Batley.

I think Ellen died in 1884. There is a marriage on FreeBMD registered in Dewsbury in the September quarter of 1885 of a Joah Marsden to either Amy Dawson or Emma Rushworth.

Lydia married William Lay at Thornhill Less in 1890 and I have found her.

Also on FreeBMD in Dewsbury, in the December quarter of 1887, is the marriage of a John William Marsden to either Jane Hopwood or Mary Ann Rooks. John William is just about old enough to have married.

Again on FreeBMD in Dewsbury, there is a possible death of an Elizabeth Marsden aged 21 in the June quarter of 1890.

I cannot find Joe/Joah and his possible new wife in 1891 and neither can I find John William or Elizabeth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Where is Wicker? And a seemingly unfortunate family
« on: Thursday 09 December 10 10:22 GMT (UK)  »
Ernest Houghland married Florence (I think Rowan) in 1890 and they are living at Brightside Bierlow in 1891.

I have found a baptism for their eldest child, William, on the family search beta site on 28 Oct 1891. However, the baptism place is given as Wicker.

I know there is a Wickersley near Rotherham but it does make sense for this to be the same place so does anyone know where Wicker is?

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Anyone researching Greenhough in Cawthorne?
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
George Greenhough married Hannah Hoyle at Cawthorne on 6 Feb 1815 and had four children of whom I am aware, all baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in Cawthorne :

Harriet, baptised 14 Jan 1816

John, baptised 21 Sep 1817

Sarah, baptised 22 Feb 1824

George, baptised 9 Jun 1830

They all then seem to disappear off the face of the earth so I should be interested to know if anyone else is researching Greenhoughs in the Cawthorne area.

There were four George Kenworthys:

George, baptised at Penistone on 16 Sep 1858, s/o Samuel Kenworthy and Mary.

George, baptised at Thurgoland on 31 Jul 1859, s/o Henry Kenworthy and Jane.

George, baptised at Barnsley on 30 Dec 1860, s/o George Kenworth and Ann.

George, baptised at Penistone on 18 Aug 1861, s/o William Kenworthy and Ann.

One of these went off to the USA and possibly married his first cousin.

One married Sarah Senior with the marriage being registered in the Barnsley civil district in the March quarter of 1880.

I know it is a lot to ask but is it possible for someone to check on the 1880 marriage to determine the father of the George who married Sarah Senior.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Handel Bailey - 1851 census look up please
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
Handel Bailey (a baby with big ears??) was baptised at Holmfirth on 11 Aug 1844; parents John Bailey and Sarah Ann. I do not have any age for John and Sarah Ann.

Could someone please look at the 1851 census to see if a Hannah Maria Bailey (born 1837/8) is in the same household and hence Handel's sister.

Thank you.

Cornelius Hoyle and Emma Scargill are my GG Grandparents; their son John is my Great Grandfather and I have his birth certificate. He was born on 7 Jun 1862 at Bottoms, Heckmondwike. The family lived at Shelley up to the 1851 census, were in Heckmondwike in the 1861 census and then back in Shelley in the 1871 census where they remained.

I looked at the new pilot/beta family search web site. John Hoyle, parents Cornelius Hoyle and Emma, born 11 Jun 1862; baptised 11 Oct 1862 at Salterhebble, which is near Halifax.

I then looked at some of their other children:

George, born 21 Jul 1860 at Emley; baptised 11 Oct 1862 at Salterhebble

John (above)

Arthur, born 7 Oct 1866 at Shelley; baptised 11 Oct 1862 at Salterhebble

Mary Ann, born 7 May 1869; baptised 8 Aug 1869 at Salterhebble

Ada, born 1871 at Shelley but I couldn't find her baptism

Annie, born 26 Jun 1873 at Shelley; baptised 13 Sep 1874 at Salterhebble

Lilly, born 1884 at Shelley; baptised 13 Apr 1884 at Salterhebble

I looked at genuki and there is a Methodist Chapel at Salterhebble but why, why, why on earth would the family go from Shelley to near Halifax to baptise their children?

I can only think there is an error on the pilot web site but then why would such an error be repeated many times?

Any thoughts, suggestions and comments are most welcome because I am confused!

Thank you.
