Yorkshire (West Riding) / Another Conundrum - Emley/Heckmondwike
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Joseph Scargill married Mary Hallas at Emley on 28 Jan 1828 and they were living at Shitlington (what a nice place to live!) in 1851.

Mary was born a Lepton ca 1808. She was 43 in 1851 but I have not been able to find a baptism.

Joseph died in 1851 - as Shitlington in near Emley I think he may have been buried there but I am not sure.

Someone else has told me that Mary re-married at Kirkheaton on 16 Jan 1859 to Thomas Goldthorp(e). This is on FreeBMD in the March quarter of 1859 at Huddersfield so it seems to be correct.

The only other information I have been able to find is a Mary Gawthorp (born ca 1808 at Lepton) living in Heckmondwike in 1861. Goldthorp(e) / Gawthorpe is possible with a Yorkshire accent but Mary is a widow and why move from Emley/Kirkheaton to Heckmondwike?

They other researcher also told me that Mary died in 1874 but I have not been able to confirm this.

Any suggestions or comments are most welcome.

Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Baptisms in Rastrick
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a Samuel Mitchell, born 1800/1 in Rastrick, and a John Mitchell, born 1798/9 in Rastrick.

They are in different families and I am trying to find out if they are related.

I have the CD for St Mary's in Elland but there are no baptisms for either Samuel or John. There is nothing on the IGI either.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thank you.

I have a family of Jaques or Jacques living in Barnsley with John being the father. He was born in Barnsley ca 1812 and is in the 1861 census at 11 Cannon Street, Barnsey aged 49.

I have an interest in the Youle/Youel families in Dodorth and Barnsley and another researcher has told me George Youell married Ann Jaques in 1875, with John  being the father of Ann

I have found George and Ann Youell in 1881 and Ann is 28 (so born 1852/3) with Barnsley given as her place of birth.

I have looked for Ann Jaques/Jacques in the 1861 census but I don't seem to be able to find her to confirm John is, in fact, her father.

To muddy the waters a little more, there is a baptism on the IGI of an Ann Jaques at Barnsley on 26 Dec 1852 with no father; just mother Mary Jaques.

Any help or advice would be very helpful.

Thank you

This topic is related to Glenpenny's post on Jabez McLintock of Barnsley.

Elizabeth McLintock married David Hoyle married David Hoyle at Silkstone on 21 May 1809. I was aware they had at least four children but found another one yesterday quite by accident while looking for something else.

Robert Hoyle was baptised at Cawthorne on 17 Dec 1815 and married Ann Ball at Silkstone on 16 Oct 1836. I found two children on the IGI baptised at Barnsley; Mary on 15 Mar 1843 and Harriet on 17 Oct 1845.

Could someone please look at the 1851 or 1861 censuses to give more information on this family.

Thank you.

I have Henry Ford, unfortunately not a rich car maker but an unemployed Colliery Engine Driver in 1881, born at Silkstone in 1854/5.

I think he married Lucy Ann Palfreyman in 1895 and then died in 1906.

Could someone please look at the 1891 census for both Henry and the unmarried Lucy Ann and also the 1901 census to determine if they had any children if I am right.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Census Look Up Please - Puzzled
« on: Thursday 08 July 10 09:03 BST (UK)  »
With the kind help of Jensquest I have been able to properly place Ann Ford in the correct family.

Ann was baptised at Silkstone and married Thomas Newton at Silkstone in 1827. Any census information would be of great help.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Marriage at Kirkburton
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 11:12 BST (UK)  »
According to the IGI, James Hirst married Sarah Morton at Kirkburton on 19 Jul 1824.

Sarah gave her age as 40 in the 1841 census but she is not with the family in the 1851 census and James re-married in 1853. I don't, therefore, know Sarah's age within 5 years or her place of birth. The family were living at Cartworth in  1841.

I can find the following baptisms on the IGI:

Sarah Morton baptised on 27 Oct 1799 at Upper Chapel Shelley Independent, Kirkburton the daughter of James MORTON and Elisabeth.

Sarah Morton baptised on 12 Apr 1801 at Upper Chapel Shelley Independent, Kirkburton the daughter of Joseph MORTON and Judith.

Sarah Morton baptised on 18 Aug 1801 at Wesleyan Chapel, Holmfirth the daughter of Wm. MORTON and Sarah.

Sarah Morton baptised on 31 Jan 1803 at Wesleyan Chapel, Holmfirth the daughter of  James MORTON and Mary.

With the family living at Cartworth I am inclined to think the baptisms at Holmfirth, rather than Shelley, are more likely and with ages given to the lowest 5 years in the 1841 census then the one in 1801 is probably the right Sarah.

Is the record for the marriage in 1824 likely to give any useful information? Any other suggestions most welcome.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Two Blacker Census Look Ups please
« on: Monday 31 May 10 11:13 BST (UK)  »
Arosqueen has posted about a Blacker family and I do not want to interfere with her thread.

I have a Harry Blacker born 1868/9 at Shelley and would appreciate a 1871 census look up please.

Also, Ellen Blacker born in 1827/8 at Gawthorpe. She married Thomas Scargill in 1848 so a 1841 census look up please.

Although Blacker was a very common surname in the area there is a possible link to Arosqueen's posting.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Where is Ubberton?
« on: Monday 03 May 10 09:40 BST (UK)  »
Joshua Schofield married Mary Morton in 1854. From the 1861 census I looked up some time ago I have them living at Wooldale with Mary aged 28 and her place of birth given as Ubberton.

Does anyone know where Ubberton is?

Or have I made a mistake? If so, could someone please check the 1851 census for Mary Morton to correct me.

Thank you.
