Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Help with an illegitimate Greaves
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 08:53 BST (UK)  »
Not me!
I have seen a lot of nonsense in other people's family trees on the internet regarding Ellen Greaves, including she was born in Dewsbury and she married Samuel Cook.

Ellen was, in fact, born in Holmfirth and baptised on 2nd June 1750; the daughter of John Greaves and Elizabeth Fawcett. I don't know if this was at Kirkburton or a chapel in Holmfirth. The IGI says Holmfirth.

I can find nothing further on Elizabeth Fawcett but my main interest is in Ellen's son Joseph Greaves. I believe Joseph was the illegitimate son of Ellen Greaves and Samuel Cook and he was baptised 25th January 1772. Again, I don't know if this was at Kirkburton or a chapel in Holmfirth.

Joseph is my 3G Grandfather but I can find nothing else about Ellen or Samuel Cook so if anyone has access to the parish records I would appreciate any insight.

Thank you.

Betty Hirst married Jonathan Greaves on 1 May 1848 at the Chapel of Christ Church, New Mill (near Holmfirth) with her father being James Hirst.
Betty was 'of full age' when she married and gave a variety of ages in the subsequent censuses. Averaging all these out she was born ca 1829/1830 at Magnum/Cartworth near Holmfirth.
I should appreciate it if someone could look for a baptism for Betty; I believe there was an Independent Chapel at Magnum. This no longer exists; neither does Magnum for that matter.
Thank you.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Scholes Baptism in Bury
« on: Sunday 03 May 09 12:00 BST (UK)  »
All my ancestors are from the (then) West Riding of Yorkshire. I have one interloper from Lancashire! Mary Scholes married George Brook at Elland on 11 May 1818. Mary was aged 64 in the 1851 census with Bury given as her place of birth.
I should appreciate it if someone could look up the baptism of Mary Scholes in Bury around 1786/7. I doubt it but hopefully her mother's maiden name will be in the register.
Thank you.
