United States of America / John Greenhough - advice please
« on: Tuesday 29 March 11 16:16 BST (UK)  »
I am usually to be found on the West Riding of Yorkshire board but it seems one of my ancestors may have emigrated to the United States and I seeking advice of how to search further.

John Greenhough (sometimes Greenough) was baptised on 21 Sep 1817 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Cawthorne, WRY.

I cannot find him in the 1841 or the 1851 English censuses. The evidence I have for him emigrating is quite flimsy but

The 1880 US census has a 61 year old John Greenhough in Kanawha, Fayette, West Virginia

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MHNM-53Y/p_336697066

and his death in Philadelphia on 19 Jun 1888 at the age of 70

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MSL6-58Z/p1

I should be grateful for any help and advice on researching this John Greenhough further.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841 and/or 1851 census lookup please

I am trying to link two, at the moment separate, Beever/Beaver families together.

James Beever (born 1833/4) married Martha Swallow at Kirkburton on 22 Jun 1857; his father given as James.

Jonathan Beever (born 1826/7) married Sarah Hirst at Kirkburton on 28 Dec 1846; his father given as James.

The family (or families) were living at Catworth, Scholes, Hepworth - all near Wooldale.

Are James and Jonathan brothers?

Thank you.

I think I may have just taken a brick out of one of my brick walls.

Could someone please look for Sarah Beaver/Beever/Beavor, born 1818/9 at (I think) Cartworth - or Magnum, Wooldale - and her husband Jonathan in the 1851 census.

If they are there then I should very much appreciate the 1861 and 1871 returns as well.

Fingers crossed!

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1871 census look up please

I have been having quite a few problems with my genealogy software (Reunion) and I have one family who seem to have disappeared entirely from my records. I don't know how and I am checking with Leister; I just hope the whole file is not corrupt otherwise I shall be in a right mess.

Richard Brook, aged 50, and his wife Ann, aged 40, are living at Magnum with their family. From my notes, Enoch and Olive Brook are living next door.

It is these two families that I should like the 1871 census details for.

Then to go backwards to 1861, 1851, 1841 for Enoch.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Holmes in Todmorden - need a Sherlock!
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Richard Brook married Ann Mitchell at New Mill and they had 10 children; none of whom were called Sarah.

Richard died in 1878 and in the 1891 census Ann is living at at Hefs House, Magnum (near Holmfirth) with a 5 year old Robert Holmes denoted as a grandson; his birth place being given as Todmorden. The birth was registered at Todmorden in the September quarter of 1886.

I can see no link between the Brooks and Todmorden. Perhaps coincidentally, there is a baptism of a Robert Holmes at Holy Trinity Church, Holmfirth on 30 May 1886; mother Sarah Ann Holmes.

Is anyone researching Holmes in Todmorden?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Taylor of New Mill/Holmfirth - Kirkburton marriage
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
All from the IGI:

My 3G Grandmother was Lydia Taylor, baptised at Lydgate Presbyterian Chapel, New Mill on 7 Nov 1776; father Joshua Taylor.

I then have the marriage of Joshua Talyor to Esther Ellis at Kirkburton on 23 Sep 1762, who would be my 4G Grandparents

I have the baptism of Joshua Taylor on 6 May 1739; father Abraham. However, the new family search site says Holy Trinity Church at Holmfirth and I think the baptism was too early for this church.

I can find no marriage for Abraham but, on Freereg, there is the baptism of Abraham Taylor on 2 Mar 1705/6 ‘Bapt In The Chappell’, All Hallows Kirkburton; father John Taylor of Wooldale.

Again, on FreeReg, I have the marriage of John Taylor to Mary Ellis but no abode is given.

I am horribly aware that I am quite possibly making far too much of the above so any comments will be gratefully received.

Thank you.

In the transcription of the 1881 census, living at Westgate, Meltham;

John Pogson, aged 35, born Meltham
Jemima Pogson (wife), aged 46, born Meltham
George Broadbent, unmarried and aged 23, born Meltham - denoted as a son
Arthur Broadbent, unmarried and aged 18, born Meltham - denoted as a son
Mary Ann Broadbent, aged 23, born Meltham - denoted as a daughter
Sarah Ann Pogson, dau, aged 12, born Meltham
Albert Pogson, son, aged 10, born Meltham
Grace Pogson, dau, aged 1, born Meltham

On FreeBMD the marriage of John Pogson in 1868 to either Jemima Broadbent or Jemima Taylor - typical, Jemima is not a common name but two of them!

I have found a baptism on the IGI for a Jemima Broadbent in Meltham on 15 Mar 1835, d/o Joseph Broadbent and Grace. However, it looks as though they were having children form 1816 onwards with Jemima being the last; so it seems George, Arthur and Mary Ann are not Jemima's siblings.

Can someone please check the 1871 census for John Pogson and also George, Arthur and Mary Ann Broadbent.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 census - in another muddle!

Could someone please check the 1841 and 1851 censuses to see how many adult Jonas and/or John Hampshire there in the Holmfirth (probably Upperthong) and Almondbury (possibly Meltham).

I think I have their children mixed up - and totally mixed up!

Thank you.

I have a Mallinson Swift born in Linthwaite in 1841.

I was told by another, extremely thorough, researcher that he married Louisa Garside. Unfortunately, he has passed away so I am unable to check with him.

I could not find Mallinson Swift in the 1861 census but, on FreeBMD, there is a marriage to a Louisa registered at Huddersfield on the December quarter of 1860. However, she is denoted as Louisa Wylde.

Mallinson is a widower in the 1881 census living at South Crosland. Again from FreeBMD, the death of a Louisa Swift aged 38 was registered in the June quarter of 1880. To confuse matters further, on the Honley cemetery site, there is the burial of the wife of Mallinson Swift on 9 May 1880 but her name is given as Selina.

I think Selina must be a transcription error but which Louisa did Mallinson Swift marry?
