Gloucestershire / Sherborne, Gloucestershire Parish Records on Ancestry
« on: Friday 06 March 15 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

This is really just a sanity check - There don't appear to be any Marriage records for Sherborne in the new Gloucestershire collection between 1732 and 1754. Is this just an oversight on Ancestry's part. I was under the impression that there weren't any significant gaps in the Sherborne records.

Anyone want to chip in an explanation?

Cheers,

Chris

The Common Room / Missing Family in 1891 Census
« on: Thursday 14 November 13 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have been assured by almost every article, book, and lecture there is that if your relatives were alive and in the country then they will definitely be in the census.

However I have one particular family which appears in 1881 and 1901 but I cannot find a single entry for any of them in 1891.

Now, the significance of this?  The head of the family, George Mowbray, died in the early part of 1891 (February in fact).  Obviously, this leaves the rest of the family in a serious situation which may in part explain my difficulty in finding them.

If I list the family members that I cannot find below, I'd be really appreciative if anyone can find them.  I for one am stumped.

Susan Mowbray (née Russell) b. 1851 Norton/Bromyard, Herefordshire
Frederick Mowbray b. 1881 Aston, Warwickshire
Sarah Ann Mowbray b. 1883 Aston, Warwickshire
Lillie Mowbray b. 1885 Linton/Bromyard, Herefordshire
Annie Mowbray b. 1886 Norton/Bromyard, Herefordshire
Richard Mowbray b. 1887 Bromyard, Herefordshire
Edward Mowbray b. 1890 Bromyard, Herefordshire (d. 1892)

I actually happen to know what happened to all of these people, but I really want to know what happened to them immediately following the death of George.

Thanks for any help,

Chris

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Worcestershire Marriage Index (Grooms) - MOWBRAY
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was informed this morning that a countywide Marriage Index does exist at the Worcestershire Archives.  I'd be interested to know if anyone is able to look up the name MOWBRAY (or alternative spellings MOWBREY, MOBRAY, MOWBERRY, MOWBURY etc) in this index for the grooms.

I am mainly interested in ANYTHING BETWEEN 1650 and 1750.

I would be very grateful to anyone who is able to help me out.

Many thanks,

Chris

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Stonesfield Parish Registers - TOWNSEND
« on: Monday 24 June 13 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Could anybody with access to a copy of the Stonesfield Parish Register Transcripts please verify the existence of any Townsends in the parish pre 1750.

Additionally, could you check for any instances of a Thomas Townsend between 1700 and 1750.

Many Thanks,

Chris

The Common Room / Thomas Townsend of Chadlington - next steps
« on: Saturday 22 June 13 12:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've posted on here a couple of times  about this chap.  Previously he was believed to be from Wardington, but it appears that this was a transcription error in a copy of the Marriage and Bonds Index for Oxfordshire.  His marriage licence clearly states that he is of the parish Chadlington.

Now, there is a significant lack of Townsends in Chadlington between the middle of the 1600s and 1744 (when Thomas's children were baptised there).  What I need to establish is if Thomas is indeed just a descendent of these earlier Townsends, and then in turn how he is connected.  I can find no baptism of a Thomas c. 1723 in any of the parishes within an 10 mile radius.

So here's my question.  What other records can I seek out, other than his marriage licence, which I have, in order to help me locate his Baptism.

All ideas welcome.  This is where the real detective work starts I guess!

Cheers,

Chris

The Common Room / Lost Parish Records
« on: Saturday 08 June 13 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

This is really just for general discussion.  I was wondering this morning how often 'lost' parish registers actually turn up somewhere, and if there were any significant incidences of this happening?

Share your tales!

Hi all,

If anyone would be so kind as to please check out the presence of any record pertaining to a Thomas Townsend c.1720 in the Wardington Parish Records I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Oxfordshire / Huckins of Chadlington/Stonesfield
« on: Monday 25 February 13 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Just one of many requests I am sure.  I think I have done all the easy stuff on my family tree by now!  Starting to get harder.

My Great Great Grandmother was Louisa Huckin, daughter of Dennis Huckin and Frances Martin, in turn, Dennis was the only son of Charles Huckin and Mary Ann Davis.  Here is my problem...

I cannot find ANY baptism records for Louisa, Dennis or Charles.  I cannot find a marriage for Dennis either.

Now, I do know that Louisa's son (my Great Grandfather) was a baptist.  And fortunately, I have found 3 of Louisa's siblings in the Chipping Norton Baptist Chapel Registers.  However, that's all I've found.

Charles and Mary Ann married in Stonesfield in 1840.  In the 1851 census, Mary Ann is a widow.   I cannot find even a Death in the BMD for Charles.  There were 2 registered deaths for a Charles Hucking between 1837 and 1851.  I have checked both, and both were infants (one in Abingdon, the other in Banbury).  Additionally, at the time of marriage, Charles is recorded as being 30 years of age, and that his father's name is William.  Despite this I cannot find any baptism for him either.

Essentially, I am at a loss to know where to look for a baptism of ANY of these people.  And ideally, a death record for Charles.

All suggestions VERY welcome.

Thanks,

Chris
