The Common Room / Jane Empson, Leafield 1847
« on: Wednesday 26 October 16 09:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Jane Empson, born Leafield, Oxfordshire, baptised 1847. Appears in 1851 and 1861 in Leafield with parents John and Harriett. Appears in 1871 census in Leafield lodging with a Fitzgerald family. Disappears thereafter.

I cannot find a Birth Index for her. I have found a marriage in 1871 in the local area, but it is a different Jane Empson. I have found no obvious death for her. I have found no likely candidates in overseas censuses, Scottish records, or Irish civil records. I have found no immigration records for her. I have found no criminal records for her.

The only option I haven't exhausted is that she's named "J.E." in an asylum somewhere. Other than that I'm out of options.

All suggestions welcome.

Cheers,

Chris

The Common Room / "Linah" Sierford/Siford, Leafield
« on: Thursday 06 October 16 09:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, any help on this much appreciated.

My 6x Great Grandparents were William Sierford/Siford, and his wife Lina/Linah, of Leafield, Oxfordshire.

William and Lina had four children that I can find, Mary (my ancestor), Charles, David, and William, all baptised in Leafield between 1799 and 1813.

William and Lina (recorded as Fabina) are found in the 1841 census in Leafield. William and Lina's ages are both given as 70. William is marked is being born in Oxfordshire. Lina on the other hand is recorded with a mark in the far right hand column for 'Scotland, Ireland, or Foreign Parts'. The mark could easily be an S, and I or an F!

William and Lina both died in Leafield in 1845. In the burial record no age is recorded for Lina. William's is recorded as 76.

So here's the problem. No marriage record for this couple, and no obvious indication as to where Lina is from or when she was born!

Not a lot to go on I know, but does any one have any suggestions as to how to find out more about Lina?

Many thanks,

Chris

Carmarthenshire / David Howells born c.1824
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 10:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Just a quick request if anyone is able to find a baptism for a David Howells/Howell son of Daniel in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, or Cwmavon, Glamorgan.

He lists Kidwelly as his place of birth consistently, and lists his father as Daniel, a collier on his marriage certificate. I have found him in the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses living first in Michaelston-super-Avon, and then in Swansea. In the 1881 census he lists Cwmavon as his place of birth.

I can find a likely candidate for Daniel in the 1851 and 1841 census, but it would be better to find a baptism if possible.

Many thanks for any help.

Chris

The Common Room / More Recent Criminal History
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Recently I found out that my Great Grandfather spent some time in prison. There are various family rumours as regards what for, but I've no documentation to support this at all.

He died in 1985, and apparently was away with the REME throughout the Second World War. So whenever and for how long he went to prison for I suspect we're looking at after 1945. Although my mother claims not to remember this, only to know that it happened, so probably more likely 1945-1960.

How on earth does one go about finding details/proof of this kind of thing?

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,

Chris

Europe / Albert Joshua Hasenclever, Remscheid
« on: Wednesday 29 June 16 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

My greatx3 grandfather was Albert Joshua Hasenclever. Naturalised British Citizen as of 1866 - his naturalisation papers detail that he came to Britain in 1863. I have no travelling information for him. He was a merchant and obviously travelled a lot. He died in Durban, a long way from his family at the time.

Anyway, throughout the records he is recorded as being from Remscheid, Nord-Westphalen, and being born in approximately 1840. His father's name is recorded as 'Josiah' on his marriage certificate.

This is all the information I currently have. I don't know any details about his religious affiliation. He had a son called Joshua, which of course could have some Jewish connotations, but is far from conclusive. For records or indices available online I haven't found this man anywhere.

If anyone is able to help me in my foray into German Genealogy I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks,

Chris

The Common Room / Robert Isham, Greens Norton
« on: Wednesday 01 June 16 12:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm running into some difficulty with a Robert Isham/Isom/Isum of Green's Norton, Northamptonshire. He is the father of William Isum b. 1651 in Green's Norton. He married Jane Clubber in Green's Norton in 1742. I'm trying to found out where and when he was born.

I have seen a whole raft of trees online with this character, giving his date of birth as 1625, and his place of birth as either Green's Norton or Pytchley Hall. But none of them give any source citations, so I'd prefer to ignore them for now. If anyone has any sources that would be of relevance, I'd be most grateful.

There is a pretty well-to-do Isham family close by, and I suspect that some rather hopeful people have attempted to link the two, without references.

The problem seems to be that transcribers have had a horrible time transcribing "Isham", given it's various spellings and the propensity for 17th Century I's to look like A's, T's, H's and even F's.

If anyone is able to help, I'd very much appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Chris

The Common Room / Address Formats on Census
« on: Friday 06 May 16 09:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Just a quick question in case anyone knows the answer to this.

On the census, when a street address reads "21 Ct 6 Ho" for example, what does this actually mean? I can guess, but I wanted someone else's opinion/expertise.

Many thanks,

Chris

The Common Room / Henry Shepherd/Buckland b.1827 where to look next?
« on: Tuesday 08 March 16 08:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All, I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas...

I'm researching my partner's family tree, and the head of one line is a man by the name of Henry Shepherd, born 28 July 1827 in Chiswick, Middlesex. His baptism says he is the illegitimate son of John Brickland (Buckland?) and Mary Shepherd.

The address and profession given, presumably of John, is Butcher on the Strand. What sources can I look to which might help me track down either one of Henry's parents?

Cheers,

Chris
