Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / Census CD's
« on: Friday 21 January 05 07:17 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what the best thing is to do about the various Census Cd's that one buys and doesn't need.  I see that there are notices re selling these discs on displayed on S&N - I can appreciate that splitting boxes may be frowned upon but selling whole boxes surely not?   I find this all very confusing - surely people who carry out research for others are restricted by the conditions written on the boxes?

England / Mother-in-law - possible meanings!
« on: Monday 10 January 05 17:44 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has any ideas!

On the 1851 Census - Hull I have William Balls and his wife Hannah (nee Turner) ages 32 and 31 respectively.   Among  the family members is one Bugle/Angle? Lydia aged 61, Pauper MOTHER-IN-LAW.   This does pose a problem.   Conventionally William's mother in law would be Hannah's mother who was Ann Turner, nee Brunt.   I don't know William's origins.   He was born in Norfolk, his father William.   As Lydia is a name that comes up in the families (one of the children in this family is called Lydia) could this be William's mother remarried?

Is there any accepted patterning for naming children?   In South Africa it was fairly strict traditionally -  1st Son, father's father, 2nd son mother's father, 3rd son father; 1st daughter mother's mother, 2nd daughter father's mother, 3rd daughter mother - and then they start going through brother and sisters!

I would welcome any thoughts or suggestions!

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 and 1861 Edmonton - Dickinson
« on: Thursday 06 January 05 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the family of Charles Dickinson aged 52 in 51, with wife Jane aged 48, and family.   I believe Jane's mother, Catherine Swan,  may be with them in 1851.   They will probably be in Church Street in 1851where they were in 1841, but I don't know about 61 -  I found them at 13 The Green, Edmonton in 1871 and 1881.   Any help would be very welcome.

One of my ancestors - George Jones - was a Sergeant in the Royal Military Train ( I understand this refers to the modern day Royal Corp of Transport) at the time of his marriage 8th Feb 1857, in Bristol.   Any advice on how to go about using this link for further information please?
