Australia / Henry Minchin - convict 1840-1850
« on: Tuesday 20 August 19 02:53 BST (UK)  »
Henry Minchin was convicted at Tewkesbury Gloucestershire quarter session 31 Dec 1839 to ten years transportation for stealing a 50/- bank note.

I can see he was taken to NSW aboard "Eden", receiving some medical treatment on the way, arriving 18 Nov 1840 and that he got his ticket of freedom 18 Feb 1850.  Thereafter I can't locate him.

My Henry Minchin was baptised 1 May 1814 to Richard & Hannah (nee Strange) Minchin in Crudwell Wiltshire.

Can anyone find anything to make the connecton please?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / James Gast 101 place of birth?
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 04:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping some-one can decipher James' place of birth.  In previous census returns 1851-1881 he had given Deptford Kent (except 1861 which was Greenwich).

This is a snip from RG13 piece 201, Folio 69, page 32, Household 177.  I can read everything except his place of birth.

United States of America / Emma Etteridge - did she go to America
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 23:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have Emma Etteridge born 1849 Upper Norwood Surrey England to Sarah Etteridge with no father, who may have travelled to America.

There is an Emma Etteridge aged 24 arriving in New York 3 May 1872 about "Great Western".

Not having had to deal with American records before I have no idea on how to trace her to see if it the right Emma Etteridge.

Be imaginative with the spelling, it seems to vary a lot, I usually seearch using Et*ge.

ANy help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Mirl

England / Emma Ettridge - where are you?
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 03:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I seem to have lost Emma, born Upper Norwood 1849, last seen in Hackney 1861.  Did she die, did she marry, did she emigrate?

I provide a bit of extra information below about her extended family.

1813   John Ettridge married Lydia Thurgood, Much Hadham Herts
1817   Sarah Ettridge daughter of John & Lydia baptised, Little Hadham Herts
1840   Sarah Ettridge daughter of Sarah Ettridge baptised, Little Hadham Herts
1841   John, Lydia and grand-daughter Sarah at Ash St, Little Hadham
Sarah not located but probably working as a servant somewhere in London
1842   John dies, Little Hadham
1849   Emma Ettridge daughter of Sarah Ettridge baptised, Upper Norwood Surrey
1851   Lydia and grand-daughter Sarah still at Ash St, Little Hadham
Sarah cook for the Smith’s at Bridge Road, Hackney
Emma with John’s brother William and wife Letitia at Bury Green, Little Hadham
1851   Sarah Ettridge married Stephen Wickenden, Edmonton Middlesex
1857   Lydia dies, Little Hadham
1861   Sarah and Stephen Wickenden at High Hill Ferry, Hackney
Sarah and Emma Ettridge also here with their mother but shown as nieces
1867   Sarah Ettridge married James Farey, Homerton London and have been traced forward
1871   Sarah and Stephen Wickenden at Avely Road, Hackney and have been traced forward

I have used the Ettridge spelling to make it easier to read but feel free to use your imagination when looking them up.  I usually search using E*dge.

As always, any help is greatfully received.

Cheers, Mirl.

Hi All,

I have a John Wickenden born 1860 Clapton/Hackney who is with his parents Stephen and Sarah in Hackney for both 1861 and 1871 census and then nothing.

I can see a John Wickenden in the Chelsea Pensioners indexes but my subscription doesn't allow me look at it to confirm that it is him.  If some-one could do that for me I would appreciate it.

Many thanks.
