Lanarkshire / Edward Tasker/Mary Davidson marriage lookup
« on: Sunday 23 December 12 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find the marriage of a set of GGG-grandparents Edward Tasker and Mary Davidson.

I came across a reference today that suggested they were married 9th August 1840 Gorbals Lanarkshire Scotland.  If this is them I can't understand why they would have married in Scotland.

Edward was born in Halifax Yorkshire in 1811 to Edward and Ann Tasker.  He was a recent graduate from Airedale College in Bradford and was on his way to his first appointment as a minister in the Congregational/United Reformed Church at Gateshead Durham in 1841.

Mary Davidson was born in 1811 in Clerkenwell London and baptised/christened at the Taberbacle Independent Church Finsbury London. Mary's parents were James and Ann.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Possible 1920's murder
« on: Tuesday 04 December 12 03:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if some-one can look through newspapers, court records, coroner's reports or anything else you can think of from the early 1920's for the murder of a woman by Harry Bird that may have occurred in the Islington or Finsbury Park area of London.

My great uncle, not Harry Bird, spent the last three years of his life at Colney Hatch Mental Hospital from 1923 to 1926 and on his admission papers he says "... a Harry Bird murdered a woman and they now accuse me of the crime  ..."

I really believe it was just his delusional mind saying this, but I am curious to know if was real or not.

London and Middlesex / Frederick Richardson and Elizabeth Gillam missing marriage
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Fredrick and Elizabeth are my direct paternal great-grandparents.

I cannot get either the Richardson or Gillam lines back beyond these two with any certainty because there marriage hasn’t been located.

In the 1891 census I have been able to locate them at 9 Blenheim Road, Islington, Upper Holloway (ED 34, Piece 146, Folio 6, Page 9) as follows:
Frederick Richardson   M   Head   25   Wood cutter   Clerkenwell
   Elizabeth      M   Wife   22         Islington
   George      U   Son     4             “
   Frederick      U   Son     2             “
   Charlotte      U   Dau     8m             “

I believe the oldest boy, George, to be the illegitimate son of Elizabeth baptised at the Islington workhouse on 19th May 1886. As it was family tradition that the oldest son be named after the father, that would make the second boy, Frederick, the first son of Frederick senior.

In the 1901 census the family is living at 81 Campbell Road Islington (ED 62, Household 325, Piece 168, Folio 136, Page 48) as follows:
Frederick Richardson   M   Head   35   Bricklayers lab   London
   Elizabeth      M   Wife   32             “
   George      U   Son   14   Errand boy       “
   Frederick      U   Son   12             “
   Charlotte      U   Dau   10             “
   William       U   Son     8             “
   Charles      U   Son     6             “
   Ellen      U   Dau     4             “
   Florence      U   Dau     2             “
   Edward      U   Son     1             “

In the 1911 census the family is living at 96 Campbell Road Islington (District 10, ED 18, Piece 838) as follows:
Frederick Richardson   M   Head   46   Labourer                Islington
   Elizabeth      M   Wife   42             “
   William      U   Son   18   grocers assist       “
   Charles      U   Son   16   provision                      “
   Florence      U   Dau   13             “
   Edward      U   Son   11             “
   Dora      U   Dau     9             “

In the 1911 return, Frederick and Elizabeth claim to have been married 26 years and to have had eight children who are all still alive.  This information is confusing in that the marriage would have been in 1885 well before George was born, but only eight children have come from their union when they clearly list nine children across the three census period.

William Richardson is my grandfather and his birth certificate states that he was born 22nd October 1892 (BMD Dec 1892 Islington Vol 1b p219) at 67 Marcellus Road Holloway to Frederick Richardson and Elizabeth Richardson (formerly Gillam).

Elizabeth Richardson died on 9th October 1925 (BMD Dec 1925 Islington Vol 1b p306) at 96 Campbell Road Islington of acute pulmonary tuberculosis and cardiac failure.  Her death certificate states her occupation as being the wife of Frederick Richardson and she was 57 years old.

Frederick lived on at 96 Campbell Road Islington until his death on 31st March 1948 (BMD Jun 1948 Islington Vol 5c p822) when he was 84 years old and died of a heart attack.

Through a tedious process of elimination using occupations and locations, I believe Fredrick’s parents were John Richardson and Ellen Sherman.  I haven’t been able to prove this, mainly because of the lack of a marriage, but also because of the variable ages provided in the various documents and the commonality of his name.

For Elizabeth Gillam, I believe her parents are Joseph Gillam and Elizabeth Hitchcock by using a similar process as above.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated

Lincolnshire / Place & Occupation Assistance
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 02:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a possible relative and I am having trouble connecting the same person from one census to another.  I have two questions to ask:

1. From the 1851 census in Lincoln Lincolnshire I find the occupation of "waterman".  What did this job entail?  Would some-one in this occupation end up being a sailor in 1861?

2. From the 1871 census I find this possible relation with the place of birth being Stone Bow Lincolnshire.  Try as I might, I cannot find this place name ever mentioned again, nor a physical place close to anywhere else as a reference point.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / ETTRIDGE Marriage Look up
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 05:17 BST (UK)  »
I have found a freeBMD marriage reference for Sarah Ettridge as March 1851 Edmonton Vol 3 p97.

The full reference contains 7 names, 4 female and 3 male.  I would like to know the fourth male.  Hopefully this will be Stephen Wickenden as I believe he is the husband of Sarah Ettridge.

Could somebody please help me find the missing man?

thanks, Colin

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Islington Marriage mid-1880's
« on: Wednesday 25 May 05 07:37 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for a long time for evidence of the marriage of my great grand parents Frederick Richardson and Elizabeth Gillam. :'(

Fred was born 1865 Clerkenwell/Islington. Elizabeth was born 1869 Holloway.

I know from family memories, the 1891 and 1901 England census and BMD indexes that they had 9 children, the oldest being born 1887, making Elizaebth barely 18 at the time.

Both census cite them as being married, and my grandfathers birth certificate says that Elizabeth is formerly known as Gillam.  From this I assume they did marry, but where and when I cannot locate.

I presume from the available facts that they married in Islington possibly between 1885 and 1887 and Elizabeth would had to have had parental consent to marry given her young age.

I need to locate this marriage for two reasons; firstly to prove a link to their respective parents who I think are George Richardson & Emma Palmer and Joseph Gillam & Eliza(beth) ?; and secondly, to fulfil my fathers dying wish to know that we're not all a pack of b******s!! :o

I hope some-one may be able to help.
