I would be very grateful if this photo could be cleaned up a bit (it's not bad, just a few spots here and there). :)

Thanks,

Australia / Louise Joy - Melbourne
« on: Tuesday 28 August 12 00:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Louisa Jane Joy, also known as Louise Frecknall. After her husband died in 1897, Louise was a theatrical costumer in London. Her son Nicholas Frecknall had been born in 1893, and around 1912 he took the stage name of "Nicholas Joy" and became a famous actor in New York. I have had no problem tracing Nicholas thanks to a search a while back by some fabulous RootsChatters.

Nicholas's mother Louise is somewhat more tricky. She was born Louisa Jane Treble in London in 1859. In 1911 she and her son were still in London. Nicholas and Louise subsequently seem to have travelled extensively, and both seem to have adopted the surname JOY.

In 1915, Nicholas departed from Sydney, heading for New York, at which time he said his last permanent residence was Melbourne. Helpfully, the passenger list notes his mother:
"Mrs. Joy - Mother - 3 St James Bldg, William St, Melbourne"

That is the last trace of Louise I have found. I'm not sure if she remarried but I don't think she did since Nicholas's obituary notes his mother as "the late Mrs. Louisa Treble Joy". Did she stay in Australia? Are there any records for who was living at that address (3 St James Building, William Street) in the 1910s?

Any info is much appreciated.

Canada / Philomena Carter - Ottawa
« on: Tuesday 21 August 12 05:39 BST (UK)  »
Philomena Carter was born in 1897 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. In 1911, she appears on a passenger list travelling to Quebec with the Catholic Emigration Society; the intended destination was Ottawa.

Nobody in her two sisters' family knows what happened to her, except that she stayed in Canada. She was sometimes known as "Phyllis" though I have yet to see this in any records.

If anyone can find any trace a marriage or death or anything about Philomena after 1911, that would be fantastic.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Calverton marriage lookup
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 21:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm after the marriage details of James Richardson, a widower who married Hannah Flower on 30 Jan 1882 at Calverton. If anyone is able to lookup the details in the marriage register that would be fantastic.

Thanks

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Alfreton burial c.1714
« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 08:02 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for a burial of Mary Frignall, wife of Peter Frignall, who I believe died in Alfreton between 1714 and 1721. She gave birth to her last child in 1714, and Peter remarried in 1721 so she must have died between then.

Thanks,
Alexander

Technical Help / "Operating System not found"
« on: Friday 15 June 12 19:08 BST (UK)  »
I've got an HP Pavillion dv6000, running Windows Vista.

"Operating System not found." Sounds ominous. When I shutdown my laptop and try to turn it back on, I get this message. However, after shutdown, if I remove the battery then put it back in, the computer turns on just fine - albeit much slower than it used to. This has happened several times over the past few weeks, and as a result I've got into the habit of just hibernating rather than shutting down each night.

I've Googled and Googled, but I can't find why this is happening. Is the computer just on its last legs? It's been a very good computer so if there's anything I can do to extend its life I'd like to. Would updating to Windows 7 help?

Thanks,
Alexander

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Signature comparison
« on: Friday 15 June 12 04:26 BST (UK)  »
Twice, I've fully convinced myself two signatures were made by the same person, only to later prove I was wrong. So I'm being very wary here and would greatly appreciated your unbiased advise. I see strong similarities and differences.

The first a witness at an 1811 marriage. The second is a marriage of Mary Francis in 1814. Do you think it's the same person?

Thanks,
Alexander

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / LMA lookup - Kennington marriage (1826)
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 16:28 BST (UK)  »
I would be eternally grateful if someone could do a lookup for me at the LMA. I would be very willing to reimburse any copying costs, etc.  I am trying to obtain a copy of the following marriage register:

Kennington St. Mark
03 Jun 1826 - Edward Butcher & Mary Ann Hill

Ancestry.co.uk have the images for the Bishops' Transcripts, but I need to see the register with original signatures. I need it to compare signatures with a later marriage, as described in my other thread:

London and Middlesex / Bethnal Green abode: Road
« on: Monday 04 June 12 02:29 BST (UK)  »
At the baptism of my ancestor Edward Butcher in 1839 in St. Matthew's, Bethnal Green, the abode is given simply as "Road" - if I'm reading it correctly. I've checked the surrounding pages and one or two other people also have this abode, but not many. Anyone have any ideas of what they were referring to? You'd think it would be obvious or they would have included more details.

Or am I reading it wrong?
