Durham / Kindred/Hails/Robson
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,  I wonder if anyone can help me out please.

My husband's Gt.grandmother Mary Kindred born Wingate, married William Kindred and appear on the 1881 Census at Edmondsley, near Chester-le-Street with their family. Their eldest daughter Mary Jane born c1860 at Edmondsley by then has married a Matthew Hails born c1857 at Newcastle and they too are on the 1881 Census living at Witton Gilbert, Durham with their son William aged 8 months who was born at Edmondsley.  It seems as though Mary Jane and Matthew came back to Edmondsley and had more children, including grandma Mary Hails born in 1884. Then I start and lose the plot because on the 1891 Census, I was unable to locate the family and found them under the name of Robson - the children also recorded under that name which begs the question why?
I can't find a suitable death for Matthew nor can I find a remarriage for Mary Jane. I understand that daughter Mary and her sister Agnes were known by both Hails and Robson, but each married in the name of Hails. We also have in our possession a photograph with Grandad Robson written on it nursing my husband. If anyone can help me unravel this enigma I would be most grateful.

Canada / Schellenberg
« on: Monday 16 April 12 22:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I know it's a very long shot, but I wonder if someone could help me break down a brick wall.  For a number of years I have been trying to trace one of our ancestors by the name of Charles Frederick Schellenberg, he is on the 1901 Census for Brandon & Byshottles in Durham, England, but after that just disappears into thin air. This  prompted me to wonder if he had emigrated and subsequently I have just found an entry listed on GR for a Schellenberg (no christian name given, but date of birth of 1876 matches) leaving from Liverpool for Quebec, Canada in 1907.  My question is how can I find out more information and whether or not this is the chap I am looking for?  Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Durham / A Family History 'Headache'
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Dear friends,

I wonder if someone could offer some advice please..

After the recent death of her mother, a very close friend of mine has found a family bible with several inscriptions of family members in which had originally belonged to her grandmother.  One of the inscriptions is a complete unknown, although he has the family name of Nevins and records a birth and death of a child aged 10mnths.  This has made us very curious as to where he possibly fits in to the family, and after looking at several family history sites, although not actually full members, we have drawn a blank other than we have found one link recording a birth and death with similar details.

It is for a child by the name of Robert Nevins who was born Apr/May/June Qtr of 1914 and who died on 24th March, 1915 aged 10 mnths.  My friends family originated from the Wingate area of Co. Durham, so we have been in touch with Bishop Auckland Record Office and they confirmed the name and dates etc and also confirmed that the childs father was a Nevins, which suggested that he had not been born out of wedlock.  On the record that we found, it gave the mother's maiden name as Hunter, but because we cannot find any marriage or other links, we cannot be certain that he is connected.  My friend is quite happy to purchase the certificate if we can be sure that he is actually a relative, but where can we go from here.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi Rootschatters,

I wonder if some kind person who might be visiting Durham Records Office in the near future, would be willing to do a look up for me please, as I am unable to visit myself at the present time.

I am trying to find the burial place of g.grandfather George Frederick
Schellenberg born 1848 in Wurttemberg Germany.  He was a Master Pork Butcher and died at Langley Moor, Durham on 22nd January, 1891 but as yet I have been unable to locate the burial ground.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The Common Room / Have I opened a Can of Worms !!
« on: Tuesday 05 January 10 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
Late father's brother died as a 1yr old in 1915 and on browsing a particular cemetery records online I was able to find details of the date of burial and also the plot no. for the grave.  However, also with the same plot no. is listed four members of a family whose burials dates range from 1942 - 1995 and who are not members of our family.  I rang the cemetery office to see if I could get some explanation for this and the chap I spoke to although very helpful, but unfortunately not the actual gentleman I needed to speak to as he was not on duty, so I have been promised a return call when he is available.  The question I asked was could the grave of a child be re-used after 27 yrs or was there an error on the plot no.  I was assured it wasn't an error and that the record shows that our family had purchased the plot in 1915.  If that be the case, how can it be used by another family.  This really gives me the shudders and wonder if anyone else has come across a similar situation before.

Many thanks

Hi all,

Could someone tell me if it is possible to obtain a a copy will relating to two deaths which took place in more recent years. The first in the 80's and the second in the 90's.  If so how do I go about it and where do I apply.

Many thanks

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Wittman Family
« on: Monday 02 June 08 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am researching the Wittman side of our family who came from Germany to England in the middle 1800's.  They seemed to settle around the Sculcoates and Driffield areas and also in the Bradford area of West Yorkshire.  I have posted a message on that board also.

I would be delighted to hear from any descendants or anyone else researching this family.

Many thanks,

Doric
