United States of America / York Regiment
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone help with the following.

This is a sentence from a copy of a letter given to me in my research.

'letters to Hugh, a tailor, from his brother John serving with the York  Regiment in British North America'.

Hugh was Hugh Logue born c1808 and said to be from Ireland who married Anna Maria Wickham in 1830 in London and they went to Connecticut. The above sentence is the only mention of anyone in Hughs family and I would like to find out what war it was, about the York Regiment and why British North America.

United States of America / Information on wills.
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have found the death date for a distant relative in the USA. The date is 1988 and is in Connecticut.  I would like to know if one can search for wills in the USA and if so where and if there are time limits set.

Kent / Parish Clerk
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 23:49 GMT (UK)  »
Best wishes and happy hunting to all for 2011.

Robert Wickham was Parish Clerk in Barming Kent. Don't know which years but he was born in 1715 and died 1753. What did a Parish Clerk do? Reading and writing essential I imagine and that means he went to school in Barming? Would it have been a full time position or slotted in with another occupation. He is buried in Barming but not noted in the register.

A comment in a 1959 letter re family says Charles son of Martha and James Hunter is in India and unmarried.  At a guess I would say he was born around 1905 in Crosh or Newtownstewart area of Nth Ireland. I have tried searches but been unsuccessful and need ideas on how to find out where he was and what he was doing there.  Certainly not much to go on but someone might be able to help.

US Lookup Requests / Searching for Sarah
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 05:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching without success for Sarah Ann Kirkup daughter of George and Helena Kirkup baptised in London England on 17th July 1839. Sarah was orphaned and went to live with her paternal Uncle Robert Kirkup as per entry on 1851 Cambridgeshire UK census. I cannot find any trace of her between then and an entry in a family bible that says she died October 28 1867 and is buried at Trinity Cemetary New York aged 28.  Can anyone help me please.

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / A teacher in school and undergraduate.
« on: Wednesday 03 March 10 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1871 census George Kirkup aged 27 is living as a boarder in the house of the Vicar of Saint Georges Newcastle on Lyme John Samuel Broad. George is a teacher in school and an undergraduate of ???.  It looks like 3 capital letters that might stand for the place he is undergraduate of perhaps.  Would he be teaching in a church school and that is why he is boarding with the Vicar and his family?  If so are there records that can be checked for information about George?  In 1883 he is marrying Charlotte Hardcastle in Deptford, Kent. He is a Clerk in Holy Order.  I look forward to all replies.

United States of America / USA death certificate check.
« on: Wednesday 03 February 10 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
In 1837 my 3xgr grandmother Ann Wickham, a widow, left England and went to the USA. She lived in New York and died there in 1857. Copy of an entry in a family bible sent to me says Ann Wickham died, 24th January 1857 and is buried at Trinity Churchyard. Thats all the information I have on her death and wonder if there is some way that I can cross check information to ensure that I order her death certificate.  Other family names that might appear on the certificate are Logue, Jones and Kirkup.  I look forward to any help or direction anyone can give me.
P.S. I've not ordered a USA cetificate before so I am not sure in what format they are in and what information is given.

Meath / McQuade of Westmeath Ireland
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 07:46 GMT (UK)  »
When my Grandmother Elizabeth McQuade married Grandfather Ernest Wickham in 1890 in Brisbane Qld Australia she put down her age as 22 yrs old and that her parents were Thomas McQuade farmer and Elizabeth Bell of Killnean, Westmeath Ireland. I am told a sister Alice Jane, a bit older, travelled out to Australia with her.  I can't find McQuade in Westmeath but I am sure someone out there will be able to help me with advice or information and I look forward to replies.
