The Common Room / Re: Oh for an unusual surname
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Having an unusual surname for a particular area can make it easier to find someone. My gx3 grandfathers surname was Sweet. I found it quite easy to research that line because there aren't that many Sweets in South Wales. Another line of my family in South Wales have the name Bevan, and researching that line is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The Common Room / Relation question
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have been trying to work this out but I am finding it a bit confusing.
I wonder if somebody could tell me what relation the son of the half brother of my great great grandmother would be to me?

Thanks

Wales / Re: Welsh genealogy
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 18:06 BST (UK)  »
A lot of people seem to have the same problems researching Welsh genealogy. I found it much easier to research the English side of my family history but I've hit a brick wall with the Welsh side for much the same reason that other people have posted, common names, placenanes, non conformity ect. It is definitely more complex than the English side of things or at least it can be.

As other people have said, it does vary so much.  You just have to give a few of the free ones a go and see which you prefer.

Also, it might be a good idea to post on the Roots chat forum specifically for Aberdeen.

This is a good website if you are researching a world war one soldier.

If I remember rightly there is a three in one chance of finding any service records but there are other records such as the medal rolls index which can help fill in the gaps.

The Common Room / Re: Non conformist baptised in anglican church
« on: Monday 26 May 14 19:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Well the ancestors that I am posting about were my 2X great grandfather and his wife. They were both buried in a non conformist chapel graveyard along with their two children. After finding this out I assumed that all the rest of my ancestors in that line would also be non conformist. After looking through the parish registers I found what looks like the baptism for this same 2x great grandfather along with one of his siblings in the Anglican church.

The ancestors that I am talking moved from the rural areas of mid wales to the industrial areas of South Wales during the 19th century.
