Australia / Re: JOHN BRADY - POSSIBLE CONVICT??
« on: Sunday 30 May 10 07:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi Wiggy & Deb,
Thanks for replies.

John Brady's parents name were John Brady and Anne (her surname appears to be Davey but later and could be due to the accent Dorsey.  The convict I am interested in came over on the Hydrabred (3) 13 Sept 1850.  It appears he may have got his Cert of Freedom in 1853.  I am assuming that if it was him the shipping lines back then may have taken him to Warrambool as on his wedding cert it gives his address as Woodford which is near Warrambool and he was married in the Manse there - but he was Catholic but was married in Presbyterian Manse!

Australia / John BRADY - possible Convict??
« on: Sunday 30 May 10 03:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I need some advice or guidance - I have a John Brady born estimated about 1832.  He married Ellen Penrose in Warambool in 1856.  On his wedding cert and from our family info he was born Dublin.  I have found out how Ellen arrived in Australia - however I am a loss in tracking down John Brady.  On the wedding certificate he gives his age at 24.  I have looked at records for immigration in Vic, SA & NSW to no avail!  There is however a John Brady - Convict in Van Diemans Land that may be him.   Is there anyway I can confirm this.  I have contacted Tassie - but keep getting no response.  I have also tried Ireland and they said I would need to hire someone to check information there for me.  I know his parents first names and thats about all.  All the info that I have on this convict fits, but I want to be sure as much as I can before I claim that he is the one and same.

He was a goldminer and I know he went under his mothers maiden name at times.  I cannot locate a death cert either for him.   Relatives think he may have died in about 1914 - but I have not been able to track down the right certificate.  He lived in Stanley in Victoria but I dont know whereabout he died

Any suggestions on how to obtain more information would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.

Hi Chris,
thankyou very very much for your time and effort is confirming my Penrose info.  I really do appreciate it.  Yes I will carry on the search, it is an addiction I'm afraid.  Thankyou once again and good luck in being self employed.

Devon Lookup Requests / Devon or Cornwall- SCOTT & BODY
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 07:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am a bit lost!  I am trying to chase parents of my gggrandmother.  Her name was Phillis SCOTT and she married Charles Vinnicombe PENROSE in the parish of Antony by Banns on 14 April 1832.  The only other information I have on her is her death certificate in 1849 dated 13 June in Stock Dameral.  On this certificate the witness to the death is a Elizabeth BODY.  After the death of Phillis her husband married this Elizabeth BODY at Charles the Marty in Devon on 16 Dec 1849 by Banns and Elizabeth BODY gives her fathers name as Thomas SCOTT!  So I am assuming that Elizabeth (Scott) Body was related to Phillis (Scott) PENROSE.  On the 1851 census Elizabeth gives Devon as place of birth.  So I thought I would start in Devon, but I have not been able to track a birth for either of these ladies.  Can anyone suggest how I should go about this.  If I contact the Parish Clerks are they able to see more info on other records of churches etc.  I am chasing my tail and getting now where fast! :P

Hi Chris,
Yes I assume they are siblings to Joseph.  According to the Will of Joan Penrose all these children are named in it.  Joseph was left 20 pounds and the land was left to Thomas.  It looks as if Thomas stayed on and got married to a Sarah and I think they had about 4 children that I could marry up.  This is where I am at now - trying to marry up and find Josephs grandparents, father and mother of John.

Thanks for the map information.  Would Babington be a tiny village in Broadoak?  This is one of the questions I had.  Where would I find to go to find info on rates etc that the family may have paid to live there?  Would it be the Cornwall Office?  Questions, questions, questions.  ???

Thanks!

Thanks Chris

I do have copies of the birth of Charles Vinnicombe PENROSE and it state he was from the parish of St Kew but baptised at St Minver.

I have a copy of the Joseph marriage to Mary Olver it states he was a yeoman from the Parish of Broadoak and Mary Olver was from the Morval parish and they were married in the Church by licence 3/8/1809.  As you said it was also the only one in that time frame.

A Broadoak baptism of Joseph proved harder to find until another "seacher" of Joseph, Phil contacted Chris on here and he found a Baptism in Braddock for Joseph.  I know I have copy of the death record for Joseph (but I cannot find it)!  He died at his daughter Agnes Olver home and gives his father name as John.  The copy of the Baptism for Joseph from Braddock states "Sept 9 Penrose, son of John of Babington and Joan his wife was duly baptized".  It seems to tie together, but as it is not an exact science it is so easy to go down the wrong track.

Or should I call you "Sherlock" ! ;D
Many many thanks I appreciate your assistance.  I think I know the other person you mentioned.  We are in touch.  Yes I understand and appreciate you starting at Joseph, because if there is an error thats where it will come from.  Until I hear further many thanks to you and to Kris.
