Cornwall / Missing marraige- Daniel Panter LEE
« on: Wednesday 11 May 11 17:42 BST (UK)  »
My 3rd G.Grandfather Daniel Panter Lee was born circa 1824 in Landrake Cornwall.  He is single in 1841 and by 1851 has a wife Eliza and is living in St Stephens by Saltash. Eliza comes from there.

I cannot find his marraige on BMD - am I missing something obvious or perhaps they never married?  Any help would be welcome.

Glamorganshire / Aberdare Schoolmistress Harriet Ann Owen
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 14:02 BST (UK)  »
All,

I have a great aunt by the name of Harriet Ann Owen, born Mar 1889 in Aberdare to Alfred Owen and Jane (nee Richards).  I know that she became a school teacher and was in Aberdare in 1911.  I am told that she never married and was a teacher all her life. I don't believe that she moved out of Wales.

Would anyone have any idea as to which school/ schools she taught at in Aberdare?  I have looked at the  websites for Aberdare boys and also girls grammar school but there is no record of her there.

Australia Lookups completed / Egbert RICHARDS - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 28 March 11 20:00 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find any record of a Egbert Richards from Llanrhian, pembrokeshire in Wales who may have emigrated to Australia c.1920.  There is no death or marraige record in the UK.  Is there anywhere I can look online for Aus records?

London and Middlesex / Ernesto De Rosa
« on: Monday 26 July 10 16:39 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for Ernest (Ernesto) De Rosa (b1881 Italy) and thanks to the forum I have located the 1901 census that shows him living with his uncle in Tottenham.  I think the recorded may not have been familiar with Italian names as he is 'De Roosa' while his uncle (maternal uncle presumably) is Grazio Conturi (sic) an ice cream seller  but his sons are Goetno (?) Conturi aged 19 and Giovanni Conturi aged 21 (Ancestry transcriber have also made a mess of transcribing them both).

I don't think Ernresto was in the country in 1891 but his marraige record has been found and he again appears in 1911 - He then disappears.  However I cannot find any of the other relatives before or after in any records.

If anyone fancies a challenge can anyone locate any of them beyond these records?

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Unmarried Mother?
« on: Saturday 24 July 10 15:37 BST (UK)  »
I am looking at a friends tree for him.  His grandfather was a Basil E Lewis who lived in London (Barnet for the latter part of his life) and mother's name was Ann.  Family lore is that the family ancestor was a Louis de Rosa who was an Italian who came to London and started a grocers shop in Barnet.  I am not sure if this was Basil's father or grandfather.  Anyway the story goes that his wife refused to have an Italian surname and adopted an anglicised version of his first name.

Now Basil was born circa 1920 and there is a BMD entry for 1918 for a Basil E  Lewis in Hammersmith 1a 296.  The thing is the mother's name is listed as Lewis.  Would this not have been her maiden name?   There is no marriage record that I can find for a De Rosa or anything like it and a Ann so I am wondering if the name-stort concelas the fact that she was not married?

Any opinions

The Gumsleys are a rare surname and there are only 4 and 6 on the 1841 and 51 census respectively.  Hortence is born in 1915 in Barnet and marries in 1941 in Hendon.

Her birth record on ancestry and BMD gives the mother's maiden name as Moore but she is registerd as a Gumsley -  why can't I find a record of her parents marraige anywhere ?  I have looked for a Moore marrying a Gumsley to find out her parents names and locate them in 1901 but to no avail?  This should be an easy task but I am deafeated!  All help welcomed.

Thank you

Alan

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / John James Lagross
« on: Monday 28 June 10 03:14 BST (UK)  »
I have a marraige of John James Lagross recorded in Bethnall Green in the 1850s but no census or other details.  Oddly he has a son Christopher who also disapears completely from all records.  I have been through various variations on the surname to no avial.

What has sparked this interest is a South Shields man by the name of Richard Lagross born c1854 who is married up there in 1877 and then lives there until 1930.  His desendents are easy to trace but the London Lagross link is broken.  He is born in London according to the 1881/1891 census but I can find no trace of him before 1877.

Any ideas where I could look or am I missing something obvious?

Pembrokeshire / 'Captain Jack' John RICHARDS
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking into an 'uncle' of my g-grandfather.  He was known as 'Captain Jack' and was resident in Haverfordwest - St Davids or LLanrian are where the family came from.  I have a possibility of him being a genetic uncle by the name of John Herbert Richards.  There is always the possibility that he was a family friend and not a blood-relation.   BMD give John H Richards a birth date of 1875. His nick nmae came about from his occasional sailing to Ireland (apparently not always paying any duty on anything he brought back!).

There is the possibility that he is living in Cathedral Close in 1906 (his name is on the sister's death certificate.  Does anyone know if he was still there in 1911?

He was certainly still living in the area in the 1920s/early 30s as he was visiting by my g-grandfather and my grandfather was born in 1926 and remembers him being alive when he was a child.

Glamorganshire / Old Stable Houses Aberdare
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 07:41 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where the old Stable Houses were in Aberdare?  I have a number of the Richards and Owen families from Llanrhian in Pembrokeshire moving there in the 1870s and 1880s but cannot locate it.

Thanks
