Shropshire / Bailey (yeoman) family of Edgmond
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I hope everyone's keeping well :D

I've traced back with parish records and wills to my direct ancestor John BAILEY (yeoman) of Pickstock, Edgmond buried 17 Jan 1698 Edgmond.

His will dated Nov 1697:
John mentions his daughter Alice PARTON wife of Thomas (my direct ancestors) and Thomas son in law is one of the wills overseers. In John's will, he leaves £ 554-10-00 (including debts owed but no names were given). His son and wife Margaret are the named execs' and John signs the will.

He mentions some land and property in Wordley's in Pickstocke and another property that he now dwells in (Pickstocke), He also donates monies to the poor of Edgmond, Adney, Calventon? and Pickstocke.

I've been unable to find any marriage entry in the parish records online for John & Margaret but did I believe find the bapt' entry for their daughter Alice BAILEY (source FamilySearch):

Chetwynd, Shropshire
Bapt 2 Jan 1663: Alice daughter of John & Margt' BAILEY

Does anyone have any further information on the BAYLEY family living around Edgmond and the Margaret who John married?

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated in tracing this family further back. Is this family known to anyone else?

Kind regards
Adrian

The Common Room / Re: Different middle surnames given ?

Hi,

I've looked around the Counties for any Gregory, Hines or Swift marrying a Morris etc but to no avail. It's possible the surnames connections could be on the mother's family side.

Kind regards
Adrian

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for all the great posts and I'm very grateful.

I've seen the original marriage licence and as stated by Bumble B.

I've the original will of Samuel Morris Bricklayer dated 1831 Findern, Derbyshire and he mentions three daughters Elizabeth Gregory Dakin, Sarah Hines Morris and Mary Ann Morris and one son Samuel Morris. He mentions his wife Ann who is the wills exec' with his son Samuel.

I also have the will of his son Samuel Morris (also bricklayer) dated 1832 and he again mentions his sisters and mother. Interestingly he mentions land left to him in his Grandfather's will Thomas Morris yeoman of Stretton (Burton upon Trent). This land is situated in Coleshill, Warwickshire ?

I found on the National Archive site:
Description: Abstract of Will of Thomas Morris, Yeoman of Stretton in the parish of Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. Proved in the Court of Lichfield.
Date:   February 11 1805

You make a great point Arthur and just looked at familysearch.org and a couple of possibilities but will need to look further.

I would love to find out more about this Thomas Morris yeoman's parents but suspect that he may have been born out of County if owned land in Coleshill, Warwickshire. Morris not an unusual surname.

Kind regards
Adrian

The Common Room / Different middle surnames given ?
« on: Tuesday 05 July 16 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I've traced my ancestors:

Samuel Morris & Anne ?

Their marriage:
Samuel Morris & Anne Smedley (Lic)
14th January 1799 (Mickleover, Derbyshire)

On their marriage licence
Anne was a widow (unable to find a suitable Ann marrying Smedley pre 1799).

I found their daughters baptisms including my direct ancestor Elizabeth:
Elizabeth Gregory Morris 1801 Stapenhill, Derbyshire.
Francis Swift Morris 1802 Stapenhill, Derbyshire.
Sarah Hines Morris Unknown Bapt' but mentioned in the will of her father.
A number of boys who died young but no middle names.

I assume looking at the middle names that they are surnames but why three different ones ?

Are they connected to the family I wonder ?

Any ideas would be fantastic ?

Kind regards
Adrian

Hi Zen,

I found a will of Richard Lynehill of Stafford dated 1684 which maybe the same Richard you mentioned.

He seemed to have been a man of some standing within the community leaving £485 and looking at his inventory seemed to have been a merchant of some sorts.

This family could well be interconnected around the Stafford area. I really need to get hold of those Walton Hurst Lynhill family wills to look for any connections because Walton Hurt is near to Stafford.

Many thanks for the interesting information.

Staffordshire / Re: George Hunt Nailor & Ale maker of Wednesbury

Hi Trish,

Many thanks for your input.

George's will is well preserved and the contents easy to read and it does state Rawbone. I forgot to mention it also mentions two shillings to Joan Ball of Walsall.

His daughters marry:
19 Feb 1725 Wednesbury
Eleanor Hunt & Harvey Warklate

Jane Hunt & John Constable
I can't find any marriage but mentioned in George's will including their children: Ellen, George & William Constable.

7 Feb 1731 Wednesbury
Mary Hyde & Robert Spittle (George in will mentions Robert Spittle son in law)
I assumed this is his daughter who married Samuel Hyde, however Samuel wrote and signed his will 13 June 1731 and probate granted in Nov 1731. In Samuel's will he clearly states that George Hunt father in law is an exec' of his will. Mary wife of Samuel couldn't have married Robert Spittle before her husbands death. Confused I am

Kind regards

Hi everyone,

I need some help and maybe a fresh set of eyes to check for baptism and marriage.

I've found my ancestors

George Hunt & Elizabeth ???
Mary Hunt bapt 8 Jun 1702 St Bartholomew church, Wednesbury

Mary married Samuel Hyde 28 May 1719 St Bartholomew church, Wednesbury

I've obtained the will of Samuel Hide of Rushall, Staffordshire 1731 and he mentions his father in law George Hunt of Wednesbury. Samuel also mentions wife Mary and his land in Wednesbury.

I also obtained the will of George Hunt of Wednesbury 1730 probate 1737
George mentions daughters, grandchildren and his sister Elizabeth Rawbone of Walsall.

I can't find a marriage for George Hunt & Elizabeth.

I can't find a bapt' for George or his sister Elizabeth.

I can't find the marriage of George's sister Elizabeth & Rawbone (strange surname). They seemed to have resided at Walsall so maybe the Hunt family has some connection.

I can't find anything so any help would be fantastic on the above.

Many thanks
Adrian

Many thanks ciderdrinker,

I will order those wills you mentioned on the Lynills of Walton Hurst. I'm hoping they will contain lots of family names to chase.

Many thanks for your help.
