I think you are right about them being men with fake beards as there are some names on the photo. Front row, from left, 2nd is an Ernest and 6th is a George.

I was wondering about the facial hair. Thinking at least one of them had a false beard.

Please would someone be able to date this photo. It was taken outside Arkengarthdale Chapel in the Dales of North Yorkshire. My interest here is the “Hird” family, several of which are named in the photo. In particular, front row, 3rd from left is “Nellie Hird”. I am wondering if it is the same “Nellie Hird” who was born in 1891. I thought the photo looked older than for someone born that year.
If It’s not her then it would be another Nellie Hird in the same family, maybe a previous generation.

I am looking for similar info, my father & uncle both served in the NFS in WW2, were any records available?

I haven't found anything sadly although haven't tried national archives yet.
