The sittings of the tribunals were reported in the local papers.  Here is a transcription of a tribunal's proceedings from a local paper of the time that considered an application for exemption in respect of a distant relative of mine.

Hi Mogue

I'm just tying up some loose ends.  Not sure if you ever obtained any further information on the Swords family.  if not just to let you know that I've just sent for the marriage certificate of James Swords and Mary Lacey from 1869.  Also their death certificates from 1915 and 1910 respectively.

If you would like copies please let me know via PM

Victor is correct.  The History Centre holds this information.  I'm pretty sure they've got burial plans for Bromsgrove's St John the Baptist church.  Link below:

Hi gataki

As KGarrad has said the History Centre is the best place to go for parish registers.  As for booking in advance, unless you are coming a long way and want to absolutely 100% guarantee a seat then there's no need.  I've been there many times (mainly on Fridays and weekends) and never seen the place more than half full.  The History Centre has the added advantage of being in the City Centre rather than the long trek up to County Hall, which I won't miss when it all moves into a new building in the City next year.  The staff in the History Centre are very helpful and knowledgeable.

They also have the facility to take copies of parish register pages.  Last time I wanted one it was 70p per sheet of A4 but that was a couple of years ago so allow for inflation!

Good hunting

Hi Valda

Yes I have the other four birth references (not got around to the birth certificates but I know when they were baptised), plus Harry's and my Nan's birth certificates.

I have one other avenue to explore in that some of the children from that generation survive, so I can ask them if their parents ever mentioned Harry.  My Nan was closest to him in terms of age, but she did have two older brothers born before Harry.

I would be surprised if they knew and Nan didn't but then again nothing surprises me at this game either.  A total contradiction I know but I'm sure you know what I mean ;)

Hi Valda

Blast - I was so focused on his possible demise I didn't ask.  I will remedy that next week.  Thanks for the reminder!

Billyblue

The 1919 marriage isn't him - he was only four at the time.  That marriage is his uncle.  The 1952 marriage is interesting though.  I'll check that out when I next go to the Worcestershire History Centre in a couple of weeks time.

Just to update you all.  I heard from Registration Services at Worcestershire County Council today.  They very kindly checked for me and couldn't find a death registration for Harry Chance.  So I can rule out omission from the GRO Index.

I'm still following up on the other suggestions.

Thank you one and all for your advice - much appreciated and has given me food for thought.

Hazel17,

Yes  - I've just checked the births for Dudley and there is a Harry Chance born there in 1915 which fits the matching death there in 1918.

Valda,

Thanks for all the useful links - will check them out.  Your theory regarding the omission from the GRO index, which was where I got the birth from is one possible explanation that I will pursue with the local registrar.

Thanks again everyone

Hi Sloe Gin

That was something I hadn't thought of but would that have ruled out a baptism?  The father was at home having been rejected for war service owing to a weak heart, which got him at the age of 85!

Thanks for your input
