Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: Wiltshire Parish Records - George GRAY born c1779
« on: Tuesday 21 July 09 08:24 BST (UK)  »
My only problem with that is that, if it's the George GRAY shown on IGI as "born about 1778" in Mere, he married Martha WYER on 21 Nov 1803.

(Indeed, I assume the "about 1778" birth record on IGI is based on the age shown on the marriage record in Mere PRs rather than any independent record.)

Do you have another George GRAY born in Mere at about that time in mind?  If so, I'd love to see the evidence!  :)

(BTW, your mother-in-law isn't Christine is she?  If so, I've been exchanging e-mails with her for a while, including finding George and Priscilla's wedding, Priscilla's parents, etc.)

Thanks!  :)

Therese.

I am extremely familiar with the errors on IGI caused by all manner of "inferences" which appear to have been based on incorrect/jumbled up census records, wrongly read/transcribed parish records and so-on.   There are many such misleading entries on IGI relating to my own ancestors.

Further, I have been told by a professional archivist at one of the ROs that LDS members obtain their data from family bibles they come across, old newspapers - basically anything at all.

Therefore, clearly, all IGI records should be cross checked.

The only reason I mentioned IGI at all was so that people would know I had already looked at it and not waste their time looking up and telling me things I already "know".

Furthermore, IGI coverage of UK parishes, time periods and genders is patchy.  To give an example, regardless of its religious purpose, the LDS coverage of Somerset parishes is very poor indeed.

I made my look-up request so that people with transcripts, fiches, etc of any of the original Bristol parish records, BTs, etc might take a look at my query regardless of what's on IGI (rather than just searching IGI on my behalf as I have already done that).

I'm not sure whether that overlooks anything that might be relevant in the religious processes followed by the LDS or not.

It seems to me to be an independent query related to Bristol PRs, BTs, etc.

Does that better explain the purpose of my mentioning IGI?

Are you essentially saying that the online IGI site (Familysearch.org...etc...) doesn't include all the data available from these batch numbers?

Therese.

Thanks!

I looked at those batch numbers but nothing came up.  I am probably doing something wrong.  What were you searching for exactly, as I only know her as "Ann".

I have looked at IGI before for "Robert Hawkins and Ann".  Colyton is right down near Seaton and Beer, east of Sidmouth, so I didn't think "Ann Rowsell" was all that likely.

Hence my query about PRs (which might not have been included on IGI).

Anyway, again, many thanks!  :)

Hi!

I'm looking for a marriage between Robert HAWKINS and Ann in Bristol, probably before 1818.

Robert HAWKINS, labourer/ag lab, c1795 of Cullompton, Devon (father Thomas) and his wife Ann c1786 of Barnstable, Devon (according to census returns) lived in Bristol between at least 1818 and 1824.

Four of their children were christened in St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol (Frederick bn c1818, James bn c1820 and Robert bn c1822 all on 25 Dec 1822 and Ann on 25 Dec 1824).

Frederick HAWKINS c1818 was listed in some census returns as born in Bedminster which may mean Robert and Ann's marriage might be found in Somerset or Gloucestershire.

I would be very grateful if anyone could take a look at the Bristol parish records and see if they can spot any likely looking marriage between Robert HAWKINS and Ann (both "of Devon" rather than otp, perhaps?).

[As an aside, I'm interested in why the children were married at St Mary Redcliffe on Christmas Day.  Was there a free baptism service for poor people at Christmas or something similar?]

Very many thanks!  :)

It turns out that the information on Christiana FELTHAM was wrong.

See completed "Tisbury PRs lookup" about George GRAY and Christiana FELTHAM.  (What a pain not being able to cut and paste things here!)

Anyway, George GRAY c1779 of Semley is not out of the question after all.

Thanks!  :)

I think that's St Swithins, Walcot, Bath, not Walton?

You'll see all his other details from my other request in this category.  The age is right I think, from all the other things.

Not quite sure whether that's "completed" yet or not!  More digging to do in and around Semley, I think before I can say I've found the right person.

 ???

Again, many thanks.

Therese.

This is excellent news!  Possibly   ::)

Someone told me the George Gray I was interested in - George Gray, christened 1779 in Semley, son of James Gray and Elizabeth Burridge, couldn't be my 5x great grandfather as he married Christiana Feltham.

Sounds like that was wrong.

Now I just have to find some more evidence that the 1779 one from Semley moved to Bath and married Priscilla Burton/Bourton of Clyffe Pypard.

I'm not sure whether that's possible.   ???

Any ideas?

Many thanks for this info.  (Also, how do I move this to the completed section?)

Therese.

Hi!

Could anyone with a copy/access to the Tisbury records tell me whether the record of the Tisbury marriage of George Gray to Christiana Feltham on 2 May 1808 mentions anything about the age, residence/birthplace or any other information about George Gray?

Thanks very much!

Therese.
