US Lookup Requests / Official Register of the United States
« on: Monday 06 February 12 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

This is for Shelleyesq.

Are you able to do a look up on the Official Register of the United States at the NY public library.

I am looking for a Andrew Foote between 1875 and 1885.  He was in Nebraska and Wyoming and on the 1880 census he was at Fort Fetterman.

I have done a search on google books and have a very distorted image of him on one register where he is shown as a telegraph operator but I can't make out the Camp he was employed at.

On this image it shows his birthplace as Nebraska but he was born England 1844.

Hope you can help

World War One / Overseas Chevrons
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
My father was called up for service with the South Wales Borderers on 19th Feb 1918. He was discharged on the 4th April 1920, at Shrewsbury.

His discharge papers shows that he was awarded two blue chevrons for active service in France 1918 & 1919.  Would the chevron be awarded for just being in France during 1918 & 1919 or did it require a full 12 month presence overseas.

Any idea what the South Wales Borderers were doing in France in 1919?

United States of America / Andrew Foote - Mary S Johnston(e)
« on: Monday 07 November 11 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Have traced Andrew Foote & Mary S Johnstone from a marriage in 1884 Nebraska through the 1900 census (Los Angeles)T623_89/14A/50 & the 1910 census (Los Angeles)T624_79/3B/0008.

On each of these census Andrew's place of birth is given as England (various places of birth for his parents) but on the FamilySearch death record for Mary S (28 Oct 1941 Venice, Los Angeles), his place of birth is suddenly given as India!!  I think this is probably another LDS error on behalf of a contributer - any views or other information.

I think that this Andrew Foote may be the Andrew Foote on the 1880 census at Fort Fetterman, Wyoming (births of the first three of the children from the Mary S marriage were in Wyoming), but this census shows him as married.  However there is another census in 1880 for another Andrew Foote (also a telegraph operator) in North Bend, Nebraska, and this wife (Sarah) dies in 1885.  Is this name and Telegraph Operator a coincidence?  Any views please.

United States of America / Alfred & Sarah Ellis 1880 Kansas
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 14:27 BST (UK)  »
I have Alfred & Sarah Ellis on the 1880 US census in Ross Township, Cherokee, Kansas along with 3 children, Della (4), Nora (4) and Asa (1), but after that they appear to just dissappear.

I have found a marriage for a Asa Ellis to a Ida Zink in 1879 Leavenworth Kansas, but I don't think this is Alfred & Sarah's child.

I would welcome another look from rootschatters.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 8th Regiment
« on: Friday 26 August 11 09:16 BST (UK)  »
I have another topic on the Armed Forces forum regarding Andrew Foote.  I believe that Andrew was a Sergent in the 8th Regiment in the 1840's.  I took this information from his daughters marriage certificate.  Could I get your opinion if I have read this correctly.
