Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Thorpe marriage to Alice Bowett c1559
« on: Monday 29 August 11 08:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Please see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,239221.0.html

I too am looking for the marriage of John Thorpe to Alice Bowett but the references above to family search are not extracted records and do not show any sources and I am wondering if anyone is actually able to check the prs from Halifax where it is reputed that this marriage took place.

However I am not convinced even if this marriage really exists that this one is the one for this particular John Thorpe from Sussex.

John had a number of children baptised in East Grinstead (extracted records from Hugh Wallis) but unfortunately none mention names of parents.  But they tie up (and others, baptisms not found as yet) with names of children on his will proved in 1607.

Extensive searches have been done for John (and Alice) in Sussex but nothing found for his marriage or Baptism, but I am wondering if I need to look closer to home rather than Yorkshire and rather than Sussex it actually should be across the close border into Surrey, although no marriage found there.

Thank you for any help you maybe  able to give to cracking this one!

Hi

Is anyone able to check out a marriage for me in the PRs:

Between Richard Thorp and Elizabeth Clark on 7 May 1694 at Old Windsor

I am hoping it mentions that Richard Thorp was of Maresfield, Sussex.

Thank you

Technical Help / How can I improve my WIFI connection?
« on: Wednesday 27 July 11 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My modem is downstairs on the front windowsill and I usually have my laptop upstairs at my desk.  My house is not a big house and although my computer has to find the connection downstairs it is not through any walls.

However my connection has been rubbish and I am usually on one or two bars and the connection constantly drops when I try to navigate to another page.

So this afternoon I had a brainwave, lets try the laptop downstairs in the same room as the modem, brilliant connection, 5 bars constantly and no dropping connection at all.

So what are my options, obviously I could get a lead and put the modem upstairs and lead between it and the phone socket but then I would never be able to use the laptop downstairs (same problem otherway round) or outside.

I have heard mention of WIFI boosters but don't know anything about them.  Would they solve my problem, what are they or does anyone else have another idea?

Thank you for any help anyone can give  :D

Sussex Lookup Requests / Slaugham burial records - anyone have access?
« on: Monday 20 June 11 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to prove if the following burial is correct:

John Snashell on 24 April 1744 at Slaugham

Unfortunately the SFHG records have a gap at this point so I am unable to find it on those records.

Also there is a burial for a ---- Snashel on 19 November 1753, does it give a forename?

Failing anyone else having access does anyone know of an online source of Slaugham burials other than SFHG?

thank you

Hi

Have signed up to do start this certificate in October and wondered if anyone on RC has studied it?

What were your thoughts about the course?  Good bits, bad bits?  Bits to watch out for?  How has the qualification helped you since?

I'm quite excited about starting studying again, and studying something I currently have a lot of interest in.

Sussex / Does anyone have any knowledge of the Catt family from Warbleton?
« on: Monday 11 April 11 19:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've formulating an interesting theory about the Catt family of Warbleton and wondering if anyone who uses Rootschat has any links to this family:

William born 1755 married Elizabeth Armitage born 1761
They had the following children:
John, 1786
William, 1789
Benjamin, 1791
James, 1794
Rebecca, 1793
Stephen 1798

I am not, or at least I don't have positive evidence I am descended from this family but John had a lodger 'his housekeeper' through the 1841 census to 1867 when he died - Hannah Oliver who was my 4 x great grandmother.  She had an illegitimate daughter in 1822, lots about her on here already.  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,265891.0.html

So I was doing some searching to see if I could establish if John Catt was married and when or if his wife died.  Maybe he is the father.  Well! today I find that not only was John married, to a Mary Henty, but she did not die until 1860.  I found her on the 1851 census lodging with her brother in laws, William and Benjamin.

So did she find out her husband had had a child with Hannah and leave him????  This story is becoming more and more like Eastenders every day!

So after searching various trees of the Catt family on ancestry which do seem to be quite confused, they all seem to have John dying 1854 in Westfield, which I believe to be wrong backed up by census returns and that is a different John, so I just wondered whether anyone on here has the Catt's in their family tree and might like to share some research.

« on: Sunday 27 March 11 12:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking to treat myself to a compact camera.  I love my DSLR but want something a bit more compact that takes movie clips and easier to carry about.  I have read a few reviews of this camera which look quite good but wondered if anyone here has any experience of this camera before I buy?
