Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry messages - has anyone ever had a reply?
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 21:07 BST (UK)  »
So what is the point of the messages facility on Ancestry.  I've now sent 5 messages to 5 different possible 'cousins' with absolutely no replies.  :-\

I've checked and at least 3 of these people have logged on since my messages, so do Ancestry not pass the messages on or do people simply not want to talk to anyone else?

anyone had any replies because I really think its a waste of time  >:(

Cork / Henry Baldwin born 1812, Cork
« on: Monday 03 May 10 10:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I don't know whether anyone can help me or point me in the right direction but I am trying to find the baptism for a Henry Baldwin born about 1812 in Cork, Ireland.

His parents should be Corles and Esther.

I have his birth year from a marriage record in Preston, Lancs in 1844 and it may help me to find Corles who was my 4 x great grandfather.

The Common Room / Christening records on Ancestry - where did the data come from?
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 15:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested to know how the data was sourced for the christening records on Ancestry?  I ask because I have found a couple on there today

Robert Belton 17 Oct 1861 Crockenhill, Kent
William Belton 30 Aug 1863 Crockenhill, Kent
also a Edward Terry 1860, Crockenhill, Kent

now going by the information I have and by looking up their birth certificates (Sevenoaks district) as well as where they lived for census records (Hever, Sevenoaks district) I am pretty sure this should actually be Crockham Hill, (Westerham) not Crockenhill which is Swanley and I think would come under the Dartford District.

Kent Lookup Requests / A Westerham conundrum
« on: Friday 19 March 10 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
My great great great grandfather Thomas Terrey was baptised at Westerham to William and Elizabeth in 1829 according to a contact who sent me a list of Terry/terrey baptisms from Westerham church.

I have Thomas on the 1841 census at Crockham Hill, Westerham with William and Elizabeth and:
Ann, 10 born in county
Phillis 6, not born in county
Debrah, 4, not born in county
John, 1, born in county

William, 36 and Elizabeth, 24 both born in county

1851 again Thomas, 21 born Westerham with William and Elizabeth at Crockham Hill, Westerham with:
Deborah, 13, born Burstow, Surrey
John, 11, born Westerham
Edward, 4 born Westerham
Emma, 8 born Westerham

William, 45, born Westerham and Elizabeth 43 born Edenbridge

Ok so far, so to enable me to find out who Elizabeth was I ordered birth certficate for Deborah and got the following
30 August 1837, Deborah, d of William Terrey and Elizabeth Terrey formerly Heath at Burstow

I have never managed to find a marriage either in Kent or Surrey with an Elizabeth Heath and William Terrey although in Crawley, Sussex in 1827 there was a William Terrey to an Elizabeth Drewett both widowed.  That is on the backburner though as I have no proof that this is the right Elizabeth.

This morning I received John's birth certificate and this is where the problem starts.

27 June 1840, Crockham Hill, Westerham, John, son of William Terrey and Elizabeth Terrey formerly Wood.

So now I have another Elizabeth.

I have not managed to find a birth certificate for Emma and this morning ordered a male Terrey that could fit Edward for 1847 but I would be grateful if anyone is able to help with the following records in Kent:

  • Marriage between William Terrey/Terry and an Elizabeth Heath or Wood
  • Baptism for an Elizabeth Heath or Wood probably at Edenbridge or Westerham

I also received this morning a death certificate for Elizabeth, 1860 , wife of William Terrey at Crockham Hill and gives age as 54 so born about 1806 which more or less fits with the two census records.

I have checked IGI, there is no obvious Elizabeth Wood and the only Elizabeth Heath was baptised at Limpsfield just across the border in Surrey 1807 but that doesn't fit with 1841 and 1851 census so did she die before 1840 and William remarry an Elizabeth Wood?  Unable to verify at all although seems like an obvious answer.  Or does anyone else have another theory?

If anyone can help I would be grateful

Hi

Recently I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 and have discovered that it doesn't support the web package I have used for my website - Net Objects Fusion.  I have quite an old version.  I also only have an upgrade, the original full package I had was on a CD that was passed from RC member to RC member so would have to buy full new package which at the moment I cannot afford - £150 or thereabouts.

So in a moment of inspiration thought I would ditch NOF and use the free open source CMS we are now using at work - Joomla, it would be a good chance for some more practice with it, as only just using it.

However I discover that 1 & 1 my web host don't appear to support Joomla so I would need to change my host which is no bad thing as their prices keep rising anyway.

Sorry long story  ::) but can anyone recommend a host that is cheap and does allow me to use Joomla.

Thank you

US Lookup Requests / Death of Catherine Rowcliff about 1860
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Don't know if anyone is able to help.  I am looking for the death of Catherine Rowcliff/e in Osceola, Polk, Wisconsin.  I have a copy of the 1860 census and there is a child, 3 months old, Charles.  Her husband Stephen is alone with the children.  By the 1870 census he has married again.

I would really like to trace Catherine's death if anyone is able to help.

Technical Help / retrieving archived emails from thunderbird
« on: Friday 19 February 10 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Hoping someone can help me with a problem that is driving me mad!

Before my new laptop arrived, I archived all my emails that were stored in Thunderbird on my old PC.  Downloaded Thunderbird to my new laptop and then found I can't open the emails.  Went back to the old PC and in playing around there trying to work out how to open archived emails I managed to completely wipe all emails from the Thunderbird package on the old PC.

So now I have lost my emails except that they are all in a file called Inbox where I stored them but despite many attempts I cannot reopen them.

Does anyone know of a way to access them.  MS Outlook is so simple because you simply import them in but this does not seem to be a function of Thunderbird unless I am missing something fundamental!

Thanks

Devon Lookup Requests / Stephen ROWCLIFFE born Barnstaple 1829
« on: Friday 19 February 10 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I don't know if anyone is able to help but I am looking for the baptism and parents of Stephen Rowcliffe born 1829/1830 in Barnstaple.

1841 census has him in Bloomsbury London with a Thomas Rowcliffe age 3 also born out of county.
1851 census he is lodging in Turner Place, Hoxton with the Turner family and is born 1830 Barnstaple.  He unfortunately got the daughter Catherine pregnant later that year, and they married the following year.  They later emigrated to Wisconsin.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Sussex / Boys/Boise family from Bodiam
« on: Monday 11 January 10 09:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just interested to see if anyone has any links with the Boys/Boise family from Bodiam.  I have recently found a link with this family - Elizabeth born 1697 who married into my Simmons family.

I thought I would post this message as the Surname Interest Board is no longer available.
