The Common Room / "Closes or parcels of land" - not sure of the meaning
« on: Friday 05 August 16 10:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been transcribing a number of wills this week and they are all mentioning various "closes or parcels of land".  I take that to mean a measurement of land but despite googling I can't find the meaning of Close anywhere.

Just wondering if anyone has seen an explanation or knows the meaning of the word close used in this context?

Europe / France - baptism of Louis MICHEL, Rouen c1781
« on: Monday 03 August 15 15:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

According to a number of Ancestry trees Louis Michel was born about 1780/1781 in Rouen, Seine Maritime, France.  As I don't currently have worldwide membership I wonder if someone is able to check records to find this man's baptism and parents?

I would be really grateful.

Australia / Louis John Michel married 1844 Victoria and died 1904 Melbourne
« on: Wednesday 15 July 15 15:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Another Michel details to check from Ancestry trees please.

Louis John married Alicia Bell on 21 October 1844 at St James Old Cathedral, Victoria, Australia

and he died 24 September 1904 at Carlton North, Melbourne, Australia.  He seems to appear in the Australian Dictionary of Biography as a gold discover.  I bet he felt pleased with himself, a number of his brothers back home were Tin workers!

I really appreciate this.

Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / William Young baptised 1741 in Tudeley and Capel in Kent
« on: Wednesday 10 June 15 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone has this chap in their tree, or any information on this family.

So far I have found on Ancestry his baptism as above with parents Henry and Deborah
A possible marriage to an Ann Towner at Capel in 1763 again on Ancestry

I have also found a baptism of a Deborah Young to William and Ann on 18 Feb 1778 at Tudeley and Capel in Kent.  I am trying to find out if I can connect that Deborah with a Deborah I have married to William Terry in 1800 in Limpsfield, Surrey.

My Deborah is not baptised in Limpsfield, Surrey, I have been through the PRs with a fine tooth comb.  Her death record of 1850 gives an age of 73 therefore born 1777 and if you search for her on Ancestry the above at Tudeley and Capel is the only one that comes up!

Capel and Limpsfield are not that far away from each other.

Grateful for any help

WW1 In Memoriam / 16 June 1915. Henry Baldwin. Aged 30. Royal Garrison Artillery.
« on: Thursday 31 July 14 17:54 BST (UK)  »
Henry Baldwin was the eldest son of William and Jane Baldwin who lived in Peckham, London.

He joined the regular army in 1903 and had served in Northern China and Hong Kong before joining WW1 as a gunner.  He died during the 4th siege battery at Ypres, and is buried at Ypres Reservoir cemetery.

My brother's first child Henry, born Boxing Day 2013 was named in honour of Henry who died fighting for his country and sadly like many of the young men who died during WW1 was forgotten until I discovered him as part of my family research a few years ago.

Percy Harmer (my great great uncle) was the 4th son of James and Lorraine Harmer of Dallington in Sussex. Born 1899.

He is commemorated on the Town Hall memorial in Eastbourne, Sussex.

The Sussex Express (Friday 15 March 1918) reported a letter was sent to his mother and the Padre wrote 'Your boy was bright and oh so brave, and died like a brave and gallant gentleman.'
