Hi Heather and Steve,

Thanks very much for all that information, greatly appreciated. I didn't know there was a second marriage but if Eliza and Elizabeth appear in the 1841 and 1851 with different mothers that seems to be confirmation of a sort.

Thanks again,

Tor

Hi Steve,

I'd love the image, but what's a PM?

Tor

p.s. Is there any sign of Eliza or Elizabeth STURTON anywhere in the 1861?

Can I request a lookup for the family of John and Mary STURTON, probably in the town of Arnold. John was a Lacemaker, and would be about 44 years of age.

Thanks,

Tor

Hi Adrian,

I'll keep looking, but check out this site for mention of Samuel FIRMIGER, labourer, as a juror over several years. Port Nicholson is the old name for Wellington settlement. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/JusticePage.htm

The same host website has the FIRMIGER/FERMINGER family mentioned in the Burial Registers of St Pauls Church (Later Old St Pauls - see below) Wellington at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/StPaulsD-F.htm
Fermiger Elizabeth Emily Butler 16 months 1st Sept 1864
Fermiger Sarah 37 20th March 1843
Ferminger Samuel 70 28th March 1864

Ditto for a Wellington Street and Trade Directory 1864 reference to a 'FURMENGER S' living at Woolcombe Street:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/Alm1864TeAro.htm
Check out the other years listed, as he might appear there too. I can't see a Dr BUTLER, though. I live in Wellington, by the way, and Woolcombe Street no longer exists, but it will have been re-named.

Email Old St Pauls Church at: oldstpauls[at]historic.org.nz
to see if they have any other details of the burial of Samuel and others.

Cheers, Tor

Hi Adrian,

Your earlier posts suggest Dr BUTLER was in Wellington from 1841 to 1846/7 then moved to Akaroa, returning in 1848. The NZ Spectator (was that also dated 1848?) notice suggests that the Butler family had returned from Akaroa to Wellington owing money. I wonder why?

You should contact Akaroa Museum
http://www.nzmuseums.co.nz/MuseumDetail.asp?MuseumID=4
for any references to Dr Butler akmus[at]xtra.co.nz

You can obtain BDM certificates for those members of the FURMINGER family where dates are known from NZ Dept of Internal Affairs. http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Index?OpenDocument

Do you have any idea when Elizabeth BUTLER died, or where? This might narrow your search for her husband.

What years did her parents die in Wellington? There might be a death notice mentioning surviving family members.

I will check Electoral Rolls and Wises Trade Directories for the Butlers.

By the way, by ‘ships logs’ I presume you meant those completed by the captain, not by passengers. These are probably held by the ships country of origin, so are unlikely to be found in NZ.

Regards, Tor
