Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Shaw family- 1851 Census
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone able to find the following family on the 1851 census please?

John Shaw, born c1820 in Stafford
Hannah Shaw, born 1826 in Tunstall or Wolstanton
Jane Elizabeth Shaw, born 1844 in Tunstall
John Shaw, born 1846 in Tunstall
William Shaw, born 1850 in Tunstall

John and Hannah (Booth) married in Wolstanton in 1842 and the family were living in Pitts Hill and Chell in 1861 and 1871, John was a coal miner. I have been unable to spot them in 1851 but think they should be in the same area.

Thanks for any help!

World War One / Re: Another grandpas missing records

Hi,

I can see a service record for a John Pugh, aged 28 at enlistment in 1914. He was a Private in the 6th Worcester Reg. then the 4th in 1915. He was a mechanic by the looks of his service records and joined the Tank Corps later that year. There's also a letter that he wrote giving his new address at Cradley Heath.

He had a wife called Florence Dean, there's a faint note that she died 30 9 1916. There are 4 children listed.

I don't know if he is the same John Pugh as your Grandfather, as I don't know what his wife's name was but if he is the right person I'd be happy to send you a link to the records, or email the images to you.

Warwickshire / Re: Mary Jeacock (b.1765 - ?) Stoneleigh
« on: Thursday 27 December 12 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, the Mary who was buried on 30th March 1819 is in Ancestry's collection of Warwickshire burials too (which are some of the most badly transcribed records I have seen), but the image reads that she is "Mary, the wife of Thomas Jeacock, victualler".

I went through all the Marys buried in Stoneleigh who came up with blank surnames and I found-

Dec 19th 1812, Mary the wife of Wm Jeacock, Stoneley Parish.

I don't know if you are familiar with the area but Stoneleigh is lovely, I used to go through the village every day on way to school.

Lancashire / Re: Deane Parish Records

Hi heatherjulie thanks for that. I don't think that's the Sarah I am looking for, her marriage certificate says her father was James Atherton. I found her on the 1841 census after she'd married and had her first child, her father's name was James on there too. But thanks for your help anyway!

Hi, no I hadn't seen that marriage, thank you very much for posting the details. I wouldn't be able to rule it out or in until I find a baptism record but I shall definitely keep a note of it.

Thank you again!

The Lighter Side / Re: Unusual Baby Names of 2012

A weird one I've seen from the past is the first name Sobieski. There were quite a few children baptised with this exotic name, a lot were in the Black Country from 1719 right until late 1800s. At first I thought it was perhaps from some early Polish immigration but after reading around a bit I realised the children were named for Maria Sobieska who married James Edward Stuart "The Old Pretender" in 1719.

Of today's names I think the strangest I've heard was at my workplace when a woman called her very young son Kine over to look at something. I'm assuming it was spelled Kine, it may have been Kyne.

Lancashire / Deane Parish Records

I am trying to find the baptismal record for an ancestor of mine. Her name was Sarah Atherton, she was born about 1822 in Bolton, I suspect she may have been baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Deane, as she was later married there. Her father's name was James Atherton (occupation weaver), I believe from censuses that her mother's first name was Mary. I know that Sarah had a sister called Ellen Atherton, born about 1828.

I would also like to find her parents' marriage record if possible. I noticed that the registers for the era I am interested in at St Mary's Church are not on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks site. But registers from earlier and later are. Does this mean that the registers do not exist, or that they haven't been transcribed?

Thanks for any help, I am not very familiar with the area and its historical records.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Saltisford, Warwick

Hi, did you find your Grandfather in the census? Just curious because I live in the area and there is still a number 36 Saltisford, I'm pretty certain it's the same building as in 1911, it is a nice late Victorian/early Edwardian terrace :)

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Why can't I find Emily Jones?
« on: Saturday 18 August 12 15:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I don't know how relevant this is, I was looking at the census image for Luke James and Emily Jones in 1901 and noticed that they were residing in the Eyton Estate in the "Upper Lodge", which Luke James was the Lodge-keeper of.

I looked at the other people residing on the Estate and I noticed that there was a family named Longville living in "Pound Cottage". I know it's not Leoville but it's pretty similar! There was an unmarried son called Henry Longville living in that cottage in 1901. He was born in 1870 in Eyton and was a self-employed "Tailor and Parish Clerk".

It might be a possibility for the Leoville name.
