It looks like something doesn’t hang together with the information I have, so I have detailed below the “audit trail” for Emily Parkinson, starting in 1901 with the birth of my great grandfather. I have copies of all certificates mentioned below.
Birth certificate 18 March 1901 Joseph Entwistle to Joseph Entwistle and Emily Entwistle late Caunce formerly Parkinson. This Joseph Entwistle (b.1901) is great grandfather to me.
Marriage cert 14 Dec 1897 Emily Caunce (aged 38), widow, of Ripon Street, Blackburn, to Joseph Entwistle. Father William Parkinson, cotton manufacturer, deceased.
1881 census – RG11, piece 3756, folio 31, page 6. Emily Caunce, wife, aged 31 (I hope this is incorrectly interpreted from actual census document and should be 21 instead – everything else fits in with 21!), born Blackburn. Husband Harold E., daughter Clara Ella, son Walter. Living at School Lane, Lathom (Burscough), Lancs.
Marriage cert 23 Oct 1877 Emily Parkinson (aged 18) of Shaw Street, Blackburn to Harold Ernest Caunce. Father William Parkinson, cotton manufacturer.
Birth certificate 18 March 1860 Emily Parkinson to William Parkinson (cotton manufacturer) and Margaret Parkinson (nee Jackson). Address 14 Paradise Street, Blackburn. (I have an old photo of this house from 1888 – it was a convent at that date).
From International Genealogical Index (IGI) found William Parkinson, b 05 Apr 1811 and family, including wife Margaret Jackson and children. Emily included b. 18 Mar 1860 (as per birth certificate). Exact birth dates are recorded for 4 out of the 9 children, with years of birth for the other 5. I haven't obtained the birth certificates yet for the children other than Emily.
As far the people living at 61 Edmondson Street, Blackburn in 1881 census I cannot be certain that this is Emily’s mother Margaret and sister Amelia, although their ages fit to the IGI data. As for brother Thomas, aged 16 and born in Birkenhead this is where an inconsistency comes in as this birthplace doesn’t match the birthplace of Blackburn in the IGI data. I have not traced a Thomas Parkinson from Blackburn in the 1901 census, but there are 2 possibilities from Birkenhead (although I have not obtained actual census data yet). If he was born in Birkenhead in 1865 then the Parkinson family must have been there at that time. Were they still there in 1871? Emily was recorded as living in Shaw Street, Blackburn in 1877 at the time of her wedding, but she may have been lodging with relatives or friends maybe?
Does the above shed more light on Emily Parkinson and her family?
