 :D Hi Claire,

Spot on, thats William alright, thank you very much for that info.

It helps with trying to norrow the net on who went to Australia. It starts with William's brother Alfred Andrew & wife Elizabeth Andrew nee Kershaw giving two rings & a pair of earings to daughter Lilly Ann Walker nee Andrew & husband Harry Walker as a wedding present.

I've tried narrowing the Walkers down but, don't see any of them going to Australia, if its none of the Andrew family after finding James then I will have to start looking at the Kershaw family.

Thanks again,

spatts.

Lancashire / Help Needed finding James Andrew.
« on: Wednesday 13 July 11 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm struggling to find:-

James Andrew b1832, Dukinfield, Cheshire.

Have James with family on the 1841, 1851 & last of all on the 1861 censuses.
James & a brother possibly went to Australia gold prospecting, the brother coming back.

1861 Census, Moor lane, Openshaw, Lancashire.
Hannah Andrew b1811, Cotton Weaver, Lancashire, Flixton.
*James Andrew* b1832, Blacksmith Stoker, Cheshire, Dukinfield.
William Andrew b1834, Blacksmith Stoker, Cheshire, Dukinfield.
Sarah Andrew b1837, Cotton Weaver, Lancashire, Openshaw.
Alfred Andrew b1839, Iron Moulder, Lancashire, Openshaw.

William Andrew died between 1881 & 1891, last seen on the 1881 census with wife Milly & children Frederick 16, Alfred 7 & hannah 3.

Alfred Andrew is at different addresses around Openshaw, right up to 1901.

There is a James Andrew on the 1871 census in Portsea, Portsmouth with wife & son but, the son is 18, so he can't be the james I'm looking for.

Any help appreciated.

 :)Thanks Claire,

Do you have a link for the Kelly's Directory of Manchester?

Alfred's daughter Lilly Ann Andrew Was supposed to have been brought up at the Crown Inn according to my mum but, what I don't understand is, I have Lilly Ann in houses on all censuses from being born in 1877 to getting married in 1899 & after.

Is there such thing as a Public Houses Directory??

Thank you so much JM,

It is one of only two matters I wish to find out about to complete my searching but, my pc skills are limited, we had only just got computers in school the month I was leaving in 1970.

Thanks again for the help.

Thank you majm & Neil,

1861 Census, Moor lane, Openshaw, Manchester, Lancashire, Eng.
Hannah Andrew 50, b1811, Cotton weaver, born Flixton, Lancs.
James Andrew 28, b1832, Blacksmith Stoker, born Dukinfield, Cheshire, Eng.
William Andrew 26, b1834, Blacksmith Stoker, born Dukinfield, Cheshire, Eng.
Sarah Andrew 24, b1837, Cotton weaver, born Openshaw, Lancashire, Eng.
Alfred Andrew 22, b1839, Iron Moulder, born Openshaw, Lancashire, Eng.

A stong possibility for Hannah's husband is:-
Thomas Andrew, Died Jan 1840, Corlton, Manchester, Lancashire, Eng.

The 1861 census is the last one I have James Andrew on, I can't find any other information on him from the above census, no marriage & no death.
Alfred Andrew is my 2x Grt Grandfather & my mother says Alfred gave his daughter Lilly Ann Andrew b1877, Openshaw & Husband Harry Walker b1870, Openshaw, wedding rings & a pair of earings. Later on Harry had the earings  made into rings because of daughters in the family, I only have the gents ring & one of the earings/ring.

On the gents ring is, crossed pickaxe, shovel & wooden stake, on the inside band of the ring it is inscribed, (With these I got it). As the story goes, two brothers went to Australia gold prospecting & did well, one stayed in Australia, the other returned home to England a wealthy man.

I suspect the brothers departed for Australia in the 1860's because of no further information on James Andrew & the brother returned before the 1871 census.

Thank you for your interest & would truly appreciate your help, I have added a picture of the rings, the gents resembling the tools on a plaque in Victoria, erected to gold prospectors.
