It would appear that those poor fellows shot at dawn in World War 1 may now be allowed to rest in peace.
I received the following information from the Shot at Dawn Campaign today:
A Pardon at Last!
I understand that tomorrow the Defence Secretary will announce the British Government’s intention to legislate for a group statutory pardon for all soldiers shot at dawn for cowardice, desertion and other comparable offences during the Great War.
The Government intends to do this by way of amendments to the Armed Forces Bill (which is currently at an advanced stage in the Lords) when Parliament is recalled in October.
They have advised that the blanket pardon to be introduced is in the spirit of the New Zealand model; ie - it will not quash original convictions or change sentences but is intended to remove the dishonour and stigma of an execution.
The amendment will not alter the legal position of those shot at dawn and will not, therefore, affect claims for pensions etc.
A consultation process on how the policy should be implemented will be now be initiated with all interested Governments. [The legislation will cover soldiers of many nationalities.]
The British Embassy in Dublin will lead on this consultation.
We will keep you informed as soon as additional information is forthcoming.
