Census and Resource Discussion / Please help a despairing Great Grandson
« on: Sunday 18 June 06 15:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.  I have to confess that I’m at my wits end!  I have been searching for my Great Grandfather for over a year and seem to hit a brick wall at every turn.  Is there anyone out there that can give me a steer in the right direction?

I’ll try to list the information I have so far, in the hope that someone can see where I need to go next.

My elusive Great Grandfather is John Dixon.

If I may start from the beginning.
My grandfather is Frederick George Dixon, born 24 March 1919 at 96 Chatham Avenue, Shoreditch, London.  On Frederick’s birth certificate, his father John’s occupation is shown as a Carrier’s Checker.  Frederick’s mother is Elizabeth Dixon, nee Walker.

I have located a marriage certificate for John Dixon and Elizabeth Walker, who were married on 24 Dec 1902 at the Register Office in Bethnal Green, London.  This marriage certificate gives John’s age as 26 and his occupation as a meat porter.  His residence at the time of marriage was 22 Pollards Row, Bethnal Green, London.  John’s father is also called John and his occupation is shown as a retired window blind maker.
Elizabeth Walker’s age is given as 21.  No occupation.  Her address is given as 199 Finnis Street, Bethnal Green, London.  Elizabeth’s father is William Walker (deceased), who was a cabinet carver master.  The witnesses to the marriage were Mary Ann Franklin and W Arthur Pindard.

I have checked the addresses on the 1901 census and neither the Dixons or Walkers live at the above respective addresses.  I have checked the witnesses and neither have Dixons or Walkers as neighbours.

So, all I have to go on is I’m looking for a John Dixon who was a Meat Porter in 1902 and a carrier’s checker in 1919.  I have an address that he lived at in 1902, but not 1901.  I know his father was also called John and that his father was a retired window blind maker in 1902.

To complicate things further, my grandfather Frederick married my Grandmother, Dorothy Morris, in Liverpool on 5 Dec 1934.  I currently have my Grandfather’s birth, marriage and death certificates, the same for my grandmother and the marriage certificate for John Dixon to Elizabeth Walker.  Sadly, my Dad has been unable to help, since he died in 1989.

What, if anything else can I do?  I really don’t want to have to wait until the 1911 census is released, as even then, there’s no guarantee that I’ll find what I’m looking for.  If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be eternally grateful.

If you’ve got this far, thank you for reading this plea.  All advice gratefully received.

Hi all,
For the first time, I have foound a relative who was subject to a Coroner's Inquest, and I'm a bit stuck as to what to do next!

The chap in question is my Great Great Grandfather, Wiliam Walker.  He was born abt 1858 in Bethnal Green, London, marrying Mary Ann Arundell on17 Oct 1876.

William died on 11 Apr 1899 at 9 Cheshire Street, Bethnal Green, London.  Cause of death is given as Oxalic Acid poison suicide when (?inhaled) from alcoholic meningitis.   :o

His death certificate states - Certificate received from Wynne West???, Coroner for North East London.  Inquest held 14th April 1899.

Could someone please point me in the next direction?  I would love to be able to find the Inquest documentation.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.
Thudnut.

Just in case this link hasn't been posted before.  The site is a searchable site for war memorials from all conflicts.  It is the result of a 9 year project by the Imperial War Museum.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Help in finding Emily Eliza Larot (or Sarot) please
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I've recently located a birth certificate of my Great Grandfather, Francis John Hill.  His parents as John Hill (born about 1829 and served for many years in the 61st regiment of foot), and Emily Eliza Larot or Sarot (I think).  I believe that Emily Eliza came from Jersey.

John Hill was born about 1829 and died in Bristol around 1878.  Their first child was born on 2 March 1865.

Would it be possible to check the 1851 and 1861 Jersey Census to see if there's a Larot or Sarot family?  I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but it's difficult to decipher the writing on the certificate.

Many thanks in advance,
Thudnut.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861or71 Dixon family Shoreditch
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
Happy New Year.  My first venture into one of these bulletin board thingies, so please bear with me.

I wonder if anyone could please help with a census check for the following:
John Henry Dixon, born 7 May 1857.  Possibly at Thomas Street, Shoreditch.

It may be that his name was Henry John though.  His parents were John and Mary Ann.  John was, I think, a carver.

Clarification would stop the panic that I'm going off on the wrong line.

Thank you very much for any assistance.
Thudnut.
