Lanarkshire / Re: Sandymount & Cadder Cemetries
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your quick reply Anne - unfortunately, I am not local - I live in Spain.

The problem I have is that I have absolutely no idea who is buried in these lairs, and have no idea why these certificates/receipts would have been in my grandmothers possession.

I remembered a while ago that I had contact with the cemetery supervisor of Cadder Cemetery who gave me the names of the people who are buried in lair number 2443 but the names mean absolutely nothing to me.

Campbell -  Mary died April 10 1906, Robert died April 21 1908, James died January 7 1911, Jane died November 2 1929.

The Sandymount lair certificates were bought in the name of Fraser, which is my family name but again, I have no idea who could be buried there.

I have just linked through to a website  " memento.mori " and given them the details hoping that they may be able to photograph the headstones or give me any other information.

Thanks again,

Carol.

Lanarkshire / Sandymount & Cadder Cemetries

Amongst papers belonging to my grandmother, who died in 1967, I found documents which someone may be able to help me with.

The first is dated September 25 1900, and is a receipt for Mrs Catherine Fraser or Fraser of 20 Brown Street, Anderston, Glasgow and relates to a burial lair in Sandymount Cemetery.

The receipt number is 1232. The certificate number is 7110. The Compartment N Lair is number 3147.

The second is dated February 22 1954 and again is a receipt for 5/- from Mrs Fraser ( no address this time ) and also relates to a burial lair in Sandymount Cemetery.

The Certificate number is 1527. The Compartment N Lair is number 505.

The third document is a Certificate of Sale Right of Burial in Cadder Cemetery and is dated April 12 1906.

This time the name on the document is Mr James Campbell, 67 East Nelson Street, Glasgow and shows that he paid £1-10s for Lair number 2443. The certificate is number 1078.

Can anyone help?

Lanarkshire / Re: Christina Mackenzie
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Gadget

A while ago, I downloaded the death certificate you mention - but I doubt it is the correct one as although it gives the correct name, Christina Mackenzie and the correct name of her spouse, Duncan Mackenzie, deceased seaman the rest of the details are wrong.

It says the father was Ronald Mackenzie, deceased - when I know her father was Kenneth Mackenzie, and it says the mother was Helen Mackenzie, m.s. McDonald, deceased when I know that her mother was Catherine Mackenzie.

Another thing which makes me convinced that this is the wrong death certificate is that the death was registered by Margaret Mackenzie, aquaintance of 17 Steven Street, Glasgow. It also states that this Christina Mackenzie's usual residence was 17 Steven Street, Glasgow but she died at 133 Balornock Road, Glasgow.

My grandmother, Christina's daughter who was Mary Ann Fraser would have been living in Glasgow in 1944 as well as my mother, and surely they would have registered the death themselves.

It's all a bit of a mystery!!!

Lanarkshire / Christina Mackenzie

Christina Mackenzie was my great grandmother born in Ullapool in 1843. She married in 1874 to Duncan Mackenzie and raised three children.

Her husband, my great grandfather died in 1890 on board a ship on Springfield Quay, Lanarkshire.

Christina appears in the 1891 census still in Ullapool but after then disappears.

I am led to believe by my second cousin, who I have just discovered during research of my family, that Christina lived until she was over 100 years old and died somewhere in Glasgow. He also told me that she worshipped at Crowe Road Free Church, but even after contacting the minister there I can still not trace her death certificate.

Can anyone help?

Inverness / Fraser - Daviot & Dunlichity

I can't find a birth record of my grandfather who was born about 1875.

The first record I can find for him is in the 1881 census which names him as James Fraser, aged 6, born approx. 1875, born at Daviot G, Inverness. His address is given as Elrig and he is a scholar living with his aunt, Marjory Grant aged 53.

In the 1891 census he is aged 15, and still living with his aunt, Marjory Grant.

In the 1901 census, he is living at 6 Brown Street, Glasgow St George, Lanarkshire and is classed as a boarder working as a drapery warehousemans clerk.

On his marriage to my grandmother in 1901, his parents are named as James Fraser, shepherd and Catherine McGillvary Fraser, nee Fraser.

What I can't understand is why I can't find a birth record for him, why was he living with his aunt when his parents are obviously still alive when he married in 1901.

My best friend from Inverness, with whom I am going to stay in October has just returned from Ullapool where she was doing a "reccie" before our trip in October.

The tourist office in Ullapool have been most helpful and advised us to travel from Dundonnel to Badrallach? from where we can walk to Rireabach ( about 3 miles ).

Jukeboxandy - I shall certainly let you know how we get on.

Danuslave - (  Linda, I'm glad you don't bite!!! ) I actually have been a member of ScotlandsPeople for a while now, and have downloaded many certificates.

I know that my great-grandparents, Christina & Duncan Mackenzie were married on the 18th November 1974 in Ullapool. Christina's maiden name was Mackenzie, and she was one of the daughters of Catherine ( maiden surname Mackenzie )and Kenneth Mackenzie - also of Rireabach.

Catherine was born about 1801 and died in 1889 ( at Rireabach ). Her parents were Janet and Murdo Mackenzie.

I'm so looking forward to my trip and hope to also be able to visit the Parish Church in Ullapool to see if there is any other information I can find out.

Europe / Finding Polish family
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 21:46 BST (UK)  »
My father, Edmund Paul Chyla was born in Montawy, Poland on the 27th April 1907.

I now know from documents I have been given from the Minstry of Defence in England that before he came to the UK, he was married in Poland and had four children - who would be my half-brothers and sisters.

I would love to know whether they survived the war and if they did, are they still alive or have children still alive.

How would I go about trying to trace them?

Their names are Living people:
(*)

If they are still alive, I would like to tell them that their father had a good life after the war. He settled in Scotland with my mother. I was born in 1950, and my father died in 1979.

Can anyone help?

My ancestral family - Mackenzie - came from Rireabach, sometimes spelled Rireavach which is on the shore of Little Loch Broom.

I am visiting Ullapool this October and would like to visit Rireabach if possible. Can anyone can give me any hints on where to go to look at Old Parish records etc.

I know that my great grandparents, Christina & Duncan Mackenzie were married in Ullapool on the 18th November 1874 and I would love to be able to trace the family further back.
