For info. Just in case you don’t have this census

1851 living 43 George Street, Stonehouse Mary Ann & her son Phillip plus a visitor https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGJ7-GQY Philips age has been transcribed as 42

Is this record related to your Philip?

Philip McCree
Age at Start of Service   26
First Service Date   31 Jan 1826
First Ship Served On   Brazen
Last Service Date   24 Apr 1850
Last Ship Served On   Ganges
Record Type   Entry Books of Certificates
Date Range   1850 Jun - 1851 Apr
UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919

Thank you so much.
I do have the census return for the family in 1851 and also 1861, but no details of Philip or Mary Ann after then. From 1871 Alexander is found in the census records in Lochbroom.
The naval service records are fascinating, but of course, I then wonder where Philip served after 24 April 1850.
It's all questions, questions, questions...............

Thank you SS.

It would have been helpful if the new thread had been linked to the other one at the outset.

Sorry.
I always get things wrong, and end up causing trouble.

What was the name of Philip's wife/Alexander's mother?

And where was Alexander born?

When and where did Philip and his wife die?

There are two deaths of Alexander Macraes in Lochbroom born in 1850 plus or minus 5 years. Have you looked at those?

What other information do the Lochbroom Parochial Board records contain about Alexander? https://www.highlifehighland.com/highland-archive-centre/

Philip's wife was born Mary Ann Williams, she firstly married William Howell on 23 August 1825. He died on 16 May 1847. She then married Philip McCree on 23 September 1847.
Alexander was born on 16 April 1850 in East Stonehouse (an area of Plymouth).
Alexander died on 17 December 1918 in Pulteney Street, Ullapool.

I have no idea when Philip and Mary Ann McCree died, and I have no idea how Alexander ended up in Ullapool.
On the 1861 census the family were living in 41 Church Street, Stepney, London.

The Archive Assistant from the Highland Archive Centre in Inverness has advised me that they do not hold the applications for Poor Relief, they only have the register.

I have been trying to tie in a Philip Macrae (sometimes spelt McRae or McCree) into my Mackenzie family.
Philip was a sailor, and married in Plymouth in 1847. On the marriage record, Philip's father was stated to be Christopher McCree, a boatbuilder.

On 30th October 1866 his "lunatic" son, christened Philip George Alexander, but known as Alexander, was registered for Poor Relief in Lochbroom. He was stated to be 14 years old, but according to the birth record that I have, he would have been 16 years old, as he was born in 1850.

Alexander appears on the census returns of 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 living with an Alexandrina/Alexina/Lexy Mackenzie (whose mother was Mary Macrae, and her reputed father was a Kenneth Mackenzie) in Market Street, Ullapool.

On the 1911 census Alexander is living with my great-grandmother, Christina Mackenzie, in Pulteney Street, Ullapool.

Incidentally, although Alexandrina/Alexina/Lexy spent all her life in Market Street, Ullapool - when she died in 1906, she died in Pulteney Street, Ullapool, maybe not in my great-grandmother's house though, as the death was registered by a Thomas Dawson, Red Row, who states that he is a "near relative"

I have just received further information about Philip McCree it seems that on 1st August 1835, he requests that an allotment of 18/- per month should be paid to his sister, Kitty McCree, living in Ullapool.

On the registration application Alexander was stated to be the orphan son of Philip Macrae, native of Annat.

I think Alexander was probably Downs Syndrome, as his mother was in her 40s when he was born.

If McCree was mis transcribed as McGee, then there is this one, although I can see the age is way off.

MCGEE, PHILIP       52

Also…how did the son get to Ullapool?  Did a surviving parent take him and then die up there?

Gosh.............I wish I knew how the son get up to Ullapool, however, I now know that he was registered for Poor Relief in Ullapool on 30 October 1866, and is stated to be the orphan son of Philip Macrae, who was a native of Annat, Lochbroom.

What were their respective birthyears?

Have you already checked Scottish deaths?

Have you used GRO online - you can use the “phonetically similar” or “similar sounding” options by tapping the “Exact search” to open the menu

I have no birth records for either Philip or Mary Ann, but from ages given on census records, I would estimate that Philip was born between 1800 and 1810.
Mary Ann was baptised on 01 January 1803.

I have checked both English and Scottish death records using every spelling that I can think of.

It's driving me mad..................

Info only,

British Royal Navy Allotment Declarations 1795-1852

Philip McCree names a sister Kitty McCree living in Loch Broom, Ullapool, Rothshire.

...........................
British Royal Navy Allotment Declarations 1795-1852

1843 Philip McCree names Mary Ann Howell as a trustee for his son William McCree aged 19 months, New Church, Plymouth. Mary address 56, George Street, Stonehouse,Devon.

............

Philip records in 1848 that he married Mary Ann Howell 27th September 1847, Plymouth

SS

Oh wow..............
I have the marriage record for Philip McCree and Mary Ann Howell for 27 September 1847, in Stoke Damerel (which is an area of Plymouth). It states that he was a bachelor, a mariner, residing in Stoke (which is another area of Plymouth).
Philip states that his father was a boatbuilder called Christopher.
I had no idea that Philip had a son named William - I wonder who his mother was, and where did he disappear to, as there is no mention of him, with Mary Ann and Philip on any census records.
Another mystery to be solved.............
On the 1841 census, Mary Ann Howell is living with her husband, William Howell, at 56 George Street, Stonehouse, Plymouth. William Howell died at that same address on 16 May 1847 - then 4 months later, she marries Philip.
And then there is research to be done on Philip's sister, Kitty (Catherine? Katherine?)
So many questions yet to be answered, but I can't thank you enough for this info (where did you find this?)
Carol.

I just cannot find two death records.
One is for a Philip McCree / Macrae / McRae, and the other is for his wife, Mary Ann Howell, maiden surname Williams.
The last entry I have for them is on the 1861 census, when they are living at 41 Church Street, Stepney.
I can then see an entry for Philip on 18th June 1862 when he was admitted to the Whitechapel Union Infirmary with a fever, and discharged on 16th July 1862. His address was given as 11 Unanimous Row.
I am trying to find these deaths, because their son Philip George Alexander (known as Alexander) who was born 16th April 1850, appears in the far north west of Scotland in 1866, when he was registered for Poor Relief, and stated to be an orphan and a "lunatic".
He is on the census returns for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901, in Ullapool.
On the 1911 census, he is living with my great-grandmother in Ullapool.
I am presuming that Alexander's parents must have died sometime between 1861 and 1866, but I just can't find any records.
Any help will be very gratefully received.

This is a side-by-side map view showing turn of the 19th-20th century Hilton and the modern map.

That's brilliant, being able to see where the "cottage" was, and compare it to today's layout.

Again, thank you so much.
