Nabla,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Jane Taylor nee Docherty is my husbands gr-grandfathers (thomas docherty) sister.

We are also struggling with Thomas Gorrain & Mary Dailey - two heads are better than 1 though!

Feel free to pm me.

Lancashire / My Conroy Ancestors in Leigh
« on: Saturday 19 September 09 13:45 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for my gr-gr grandfathers parents and siblings.

His name was MARTIN CONROY b. 26/5/1869 in Strokestown, Roscommon, Ireland, & d. 7/12/1919 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.  He married REBECCA AINSWORTH on 14/10/1898 in Leigh, Lanc.

I have found them on the 1901 census living in 4 Guest Fold (?), Leigh with their two sons MARTIN b 1897 & MAURICE b 1899.  They had a further 2 sons in Leigh (GEORGE HENRY & JAMES ROWLAND) before the family moved to Scotland (sometime betw 1904 & 1907).

MARTINs parents were MICHAEL JOSEPH CONROY & CATHERINE MALADY and his siblings were (unconfirmed):

PETER  b ~1857
JOHN b ~ 1859
CATHERINE b ~ 1861
PATRICK b 29/2/1864
MICHAEL b 9/9/1866
BRIDGET b 16/2/1872

All his siblings (that I am aware of were born in Strokestown, Ire.

I have found a death for a Michael Conroy in 1886 in Leigh and a death for a Catherine Conroy in 1887 in Leigh.  They are approx the same age that Martins parents would have been.  Unfortunately, I cannot locate any of the family in either the 1881 or 1891 census.  i am reluctant to order these certs in case their not my relations.

Can anyone help with Conroys in this area?

No problem:

THOMAS GORRIAN was born in May 1835 in Newry, County Down, Ireland to Hugh
Gorrian and Jane Murphy. He was recorded in the census in 1851, aged about 16, in Main Street, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire.  He was recorded in the census in 1861, aged about 26, in Main Street, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. MARY DALY (Thomas's wife) was born in December 1834 in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland to Philip Dailly and Marjory Kelly. She was recorded in the census in 1861, aged about 26, in Main Street, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Mary died (Inflammation (8 days)) on 9 November 1874, aged 39, in Main Street, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Thomas Gorrian, aged 20, married Mary Daly, aged 20, on 8 September 1855 in St Pauls Catholic Church,
Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, Scotland. They had ten children, and assumed parenthood of another one:

Hugh Gorrian in 1856
Timothy Dansey by adoption

Helen Gorrian in 1862
Helen Elizabeth Gorrian in 1863
Thomas Gorrian  in 1866
Susan Gorrian about 1870

I have exact dob for some of the children too.

In November 1922, he took part in the attack in the attack on Free State troops on Boyle Railway Bridge, and the attack in February 1923 on the Boyle/Carrick-on-Shannon Road. All the while, he continued to be a regular attendee at the Brigade Council meetings. After the ceasefire. Conry spent many months still on the run avoiding capture. He, like so many other young men who had sided with the Anti-Treatyies, emigrated. He settled in New York.

Seeking info on my husbands gr-gr-gr-grandfather Thomas Gorrian and his parents / siblings.  According to his marriage certificate he was born in May 1835, in Newry.  He married Mary Dailey from Strabane, in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

On his marriage cert his parents are listed as Hugh Gorrian & Jane Murphy, however on his death cert they are Thomas Gorrian and Bridget Kerr!!!!

Hope someone can help - I have hit a brick wall!

hello!

I am researching my husbands family and noticed your post.  I realise that it was some time ago but if you are still interested in this family, I may be able to help.  Patrick Docherty & Mary Gorrian are my husbands gr-gr grandparents, their son Thomas married Mary Simpson who are his gr grandparents.  They also had 10 children, including my paternal grandmother Alice.

I have quite a bit of info that I am willing to share if you are still looking at this family.

Regards

Lesley
