Warwickshire / Joseph GARDNER of Solihull married 1794
« on: Friday 02 September 16 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

Joseph GARDNER married Elizabeth CRISP at St. Martin's, Birmingham on 18th March 1794.  He was described as a Widower.  They were both able to sign their names well, suggesting a good education and at a certain level in society.  He and Elizabeth have 3 children.  The eldest, Mary, married Benjamin HANDS and settled in Kings Norton, after 1821.  Whether the family had moved or Mary only went to the area is unknown.

I am looking for details of Joseph's first marriage and the death of his first wife.

Regards

Mike

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Tuesday evening (9th) BMSGH Meeting in Bromsgrove
« on: Friday 05 February 16 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

This coming Tuesday, the 9th February 2016, our talk is on:

"Rattling the Family Skeletons"
  by author Arthur Ronsson

My father announced before he died that he had always believed he was the illegitimate son of a famous Glasgow politician. He left enough clues to narrow down his possible paternity to one man – a hugely respected figure in Scottish left-wing politics. If my dad's contention was true, it means that I am the grandson of a man who, but for ill-health in his fifties, could well have become Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Shropshire / GRIFFITHS of Wellington
« on: Sunday 10 January 16 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

In the 1841 my 3 x gt grandfather, Absalom GRIFFITHS, born around 1790, was living in Parton Square, Wellington. ( HO107; Piece 907; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Wellington; County: Shropshire; Enumeration District: 5; Folio: 14; Page: 21)

Absalom, as far as I can see, only had two brothers, William -gone missing - and Richard, who died in infancy.  I don't know the area, but Absalom was in New Street around 1820 and much later in life.  Could  Parton Square be said to be New Street?

I  have two main queries:

1) Who was the 70 year oldish Susannah GRIFFITHS living as a separate householder in the same house.  Along with a 15ish Ann GRIFFITHS?

2) In the house next door was a John GRIFFITHS, 30ish along with wife Harriet and family.  Who was John?

Any help gratefully received

Mike

"The 17th Century FOLEYS"
- Iron, Wealth and Vision 1580- 1716

by Roy Peacock

The Foleys of the seventeenth century were a remarkable family. Richard Foley progressed from his origins as the son of a Dudley nailer to being the most successful Midlands iron-master of his time. He moved to Stourbridge and from there his ambitious sons and daughters went out to north Staffordshire and the Forest of Dean, to the cities of Worcester, Bristol and London, and overseas to Ireland and as far as Constantinople. Their wealth was turned into land and four estates with fine houses were established: Witley Court, Prestwood Hall, Longton Hall and Stoke Edith.

The Foley vision, however, was broader than industry, land and wealth. Their motives reflected some of the key religious and political values of the dramatic seventeenth century, especially in their desire to extend the role of Parliament. They welcomed its victory in the first civil war, welcomed the Restoration but opposed James II in 1688. A Foley married Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, England's first 'prime minister', and Thomas Foley III was elevated to the peerage as Baron Foley in 1712. They were patrons of Richard Baxter, the greatest of the religious leaders of the day, and came to value the importance of education. Existing grammar schools in Dudley and Stourbridge were supported and new schools, notably, Old Swinford Hospital, established.

Montgomeryshire / Help needed on my 4 JONES' connections from Meifod area
« on: Saturday 07 November 15 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for any help on my various JONES' connections.

    1) David JONES, farmer.  Wife Elizabeth.  Father of Mary born around 1809 in Forden.  Mary married Robert HUMPHREYS in 1838.  Witnesses were William PRYCE and Elnor/Elanor JONES.

    2) Jane JONES, from Llanyblodwell, born around 1797.  (Jane was the mother-in-law to the above Mary)  Jane married John HUMPHREYS in 1818 in Meifod.

    3) When Robert HUMPHREYS from #1,  died/went to the USA, his wife Mary became housekeeper to a William JONES, wheelwright, born around 1791 in Llandililio (? Llanidloes).  They lived in Tyddyn Prydd just outside Welshpool.

    4) Robert HUMPHREYS and Mary JONES (#1 and #3) had a daughter called Mary Jane in 1842 in Meifod.   In 1869 Mary Jane married a John JONES, born around 1831 from Bettws.  They settled in Colwyn Bay.

If anyone is aware of any connection between the above JONES families, or has more information, I would be most grateful to hear from you.

Kind regards

Mike

Hi Folks

This Tuesday evening, the 13th October 2015 our talk is:

Worcestershire Turnpikes

Popular local speaker Julian Hunt returns to Bromsgrove to talk about the role of turnpike roads in our ancestors' lives.

Some of the Turnpikes in Worcestershire date back 300 years. The tolls levied along them paid for the maintenance of the main roads between the city and its surrounding towns. Prior to the Turnpikes the state of the roads made them impassable for much of the year and dangerous when passable.
