The Common Room / James Welsh & Annie Semple Harrison
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 20:31 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother's brother, James Welsh b1885 married Annie Semple Harrison b1886 in Glasgow in 1908. James died in Harrow, Middlesex in 1973 and Annie in Brent, Greater London in 1976. It is unclear when they moved south, and if they had any offspring. Up to mid 1915 it is not believed they had any children. In 1932, James was living in Glasgow as he was the informant of his brother's death.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks to all who have responded, much appreciated. A few more marriages to add to my original post.

Annie Affleck married Richard Crompton 1919 Salford
Thomas Affleck married Jane Chadwick 1902 Hulme
William Affleck married Amy Amelia Merrick 1923 Collyhurst, lived in Oldham

The Manchester and Salford Family History Forum has been really useful, thank you.

Interested in the possible link to Affleck & Brown, will see how to follow up.

Again many thanks all.

Hi Heather, yes I have that, thanks. Confirms the later children were all baptised as Affleck. The family generally took on the surname sometime between 1881 and 1891, as 1891 and onwards census shows.

Interested to hear from anyone connected to Thomas Fleck (Affleck) and Eliza Donaldson who married in Kilwinning Ayrshire in 1867, before moving to England and settling around Salford, Lancashire. Thomas was the son Alexander Fleck and Mary Speirs who married in West Kilbride, Ayrshire in 1843.

Sometime after they moved south they changed their name to Affleck, and some of their subsequent children were born with that name.

Jeanie Donaldson Fleck/Affleck born Kilwinning 1867, Dressmaker, married Peter Aldred
Alexander Fleck/Affleck born Kilwinning 1869 Clerk
Thomas Fleck/Affleck born Kilwinning 1871, married Jane…. Dress Cutter
John Fleck/Affleck born Glasgow 1873 Dress Warehouseman
Maggie Carruthers Fleck/Affleck born Bideford, Devon 1876, Dressmaker, married Samuel Thomas Garside
Mary Speirs Fleck/Affleck born Bideford, Devon 1877, married Augustine Finlay
James S Fleck, born Kilwinning 1880
William Affleck, born Manchester 1881, Clerk Cotton Mills
David Kennedy Affleck, born Manchester, Lancashire 1883, Clerk Coal Merchant
Elizabeth Affleck, born Manchester, Lancashire 1883
Annie Affleck, born Salford, Lancashire 1887, Tailoress
Herbert Affleck, born Salford, Lancashire 1888

Look forward to hearing.

Lanarkshire / Robert Bennett and Isabella McConnell Hamilton married Glasgow 1921
« on: Sunday 08 February 15 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my mother's extended Bennett family. Her Uncle, Robert Bennett b 1891, a Gas Works Labourer, married Isabella McConnell Hamilton b 1893, in Saracen St, Possilpark, Glasgow in 1921. Robert died in 1929, when they still lived in Saracen St.

Robert and Isabella had a son, also Robert, born November 1925 in Agnes St, Possilpark.

Pleased to hear from anyone connected.

Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated. Yes, my mother too was very hesitant to share details about her family and could not understand the interest in it.

I think the valuation roll for Mrs Catherine Coulter is one of mine. I believe she was the widow of David Coulter, a Grand uncle. I had not seen this source before so have now found quite a few close family on the rolls.

Do let me know if I can help with any of your research on the Scottish side. Thanks again.

Thanks for the response Andarah. Here's the little I can now add.

James (Jimmy) Coulter was born in 1921. He had an older sister Louisa born 1918. Both were born at 145 Waddell Street, Hutchesontown. Their parents were William Coulter and Jeanie Cumming. Jeanie lived at 14 Hayfield Street when they married in August 1916. The family must have lived at 21 Hayfield Street at least from the early 1940s. James Coulter lived there in 1941, his mother died there in 1950 and his father died there in 1953.  Originally a Turner to trade, William latterly was a Watchman. Jeanie was a Carpet Spooler.

I now know that James Coulter married Mary (Polly) Bryson in Springburn in 1953, and they moved south to Buckinghamshire. Nevertheless, any recollections your Dad may have of the Coulter family in Hayfield Street, would be gratefully received.

Best wishes, David

Gloucestershire / Re: Sellwood, Gloucestershire

Hello Victor

Many thanks for your assistance in trying to solve this mystery.

Since placing the message I have found a few other bits of info, and heard of a tapestry sampler in the extended family, which lead me to believe my ancestor may have been named Hester or Esther Hensley Shortland.

I also believe its very plausible her parents were a William Shortland and a Hester something. In 1851 a Hester Shortland, aged 83, Annuitant is staying with daughter Mathilda Shortland aged 57, Grocer,  at (known as) 45 Malbro St, St James, Bristol. Hester Shortland died in Bristol in 1855. From IGI I found Matilda Shortland was Christened 10th June 1794 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire to a William Shortland and Hester.......She had a brother William also born in Cirencester and christened there on 3rd May 1795. I have also established that another sibling Benjamin Hensley Shortland was born in Marshfield Gloucester around 1805. Benjamin Hensley Shortland, married Sarah Elly and died in Warrington, Cheshire in 1855.  Matilda Shortland died in Belper, Derbyshire in 1874.

Following this line I found that a Hester Hensley Shortland, widow aged 60, born Gloucester, appears in the 1851 census, living at 4 Bridgewater Court, St Giles, Cripplegate, London (however Ancestry has transcribed it as "Hester Heathy Shorttrad"). Ages etc tie in well, and it could be she reverted to her maiden name after James Sellwood's death?

However I am no closer to finding a marriage for James Sellwood and Hester/Esther. Sellwood of course has a lot of variations (Selwood, Sellard, Sellerd, Sellhard etc) and Shortland just as many (Shirtland, Shartland, Sharland, Hartland, Harland etc)

Once again, I most appreciate your assistance, best wishes

Trying to trace descendants of James Coulter, my Dad's cousin, and best man at his wedding in 1941. James was born between 1916 and 1923. His parents were William Carruthers Coulter and Jeanie Cumming, and the family lived in Hayfield Street, Glasgow. I know James lived in Ryehll Road, Glasgow in 1953. Many thanks, David McMillan
