Hello Victor
Many thanks for your assistance in trying to solve this mystery.
Since placing the message I have found a few other bits of info, and heard of a tapestry sampler in the extended family, which lead me to believe my ancestor may have been named Hester or Esther Hensley Shortland.
I also believe its very plausible her parents were a William Shortland and a Hester something. In 1851 a Hester Shortland, aged 83, Annuitant is staying with daughter Mathilda Shortland aged 57, Grocer, at (known as) 45 Malbro St, St James, Bristol. Hester Shortland died in Bristol in 1855. From IGI I found Matilda Shortland was Christened 10th June 1794 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire to a William Shortland and Hester.......She had a brother William also born in Cirencester and christened there on 3rd May 1795. I have also established that another sibling Benjamin Hensley Shortland was born in Marshfield Gloucester around 1805. Benjamin Hensley Shortland, married Sarah Elly and died in Warrington, Cheshire in 1855. Matilda Shortland died in Belper, Derbyshire in 1874.
Following this line I found that a Hester Hensley Shortland, widow aged 60, born Gloucester, appears in the 1851 census, living at 4 Bridgewater Court, St Giles, Cripplegate, London (however Ancestry has transcribed it as "Hester Heathy Shorttrad"). Ages etc tie in well, and it could be she reverted to her maiden name after James Sellwood's death?
However I am no closer to finding a marriage for James Sellwood and Hester/Esther. Sellwood of course has a lot of variations (Selwood, Sellard, Sellerd, Sellhard etc) and Shortland just as many (Shirtland, Shartland, Sharland, Hartland, Harland etc)
Once again, I most appreciate your assistance, best wishes
