Mally was definitely common in the Holmfirth area and was used as a "proper" name- it appears a lot in parish registers, BMD certs. etc.

We would welcome contacts with anyone whose relatives served inthe 2nd Tyneside Scottish ( Northumbrian Fusilliers)- "ours" was Joseph West of Byker, one of the few who survived the Somme in 1916.

Any information welcomed about the glassmaking industry in Portobello in the first half of the 19thC- I think James was born there to parents who came from Newcastle on Tyne. He was a glasmaker, m. Margaret Brown and then returned to Byker N/C. mid-century.

Thanks for info- could anyone tell me at which churches in Byker the children might have been baptised and if the parish records are available anywhere? The parents Allen West + Mary McDonough were m.1874 in "the district chapel in the chapelery of St Annes, N/C." - it seems odd that the children were not baptised given that the parents were "properly" wed. Mary was from Ireland so maybe catholic.Allen was a real Tynesider, from a long line of watermen/keelers.

Galway / any advice on galway research?
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I would welcome any advice about how to go about researching ancestors who originated from Galway but who were living in Newcastle on Tyne by 1861, though it looks as if they moved back and forth between Ireland and England right up to early 20th C. Specifically, Edward Mcdonough b.Galway 1932 and his wife Catherine poss. nee O'Harra. Thanks for any pointers.

Has anyone any ideas about finding records of the births/baptisms of the children of Allen and Mary WEST of, in 1871, Byker Bank, Newcastle.- children are John b.appx 1875,Barbara b.1877, Allen b.1879, Catherine b.1881and Joseph born sometime later, either in UK or Ireland. All siblings are b. Newcastle.
Seems to be no trace of births in BMD's despite Allen and Mary's mge. being registered.
Mother Mary was nee Mcdonough and b. Galway Ireland.
Father Allen b. N/C and d.1884.
A real mystery!
