Armed Forces / Merchant Navy 1921 to 1925
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have my late grandfather's original continuous certificate of discharge book which shows his service on several ships over 1921 to 1925 (mainly between the UK and Australia/New Zealand), home address (in London), National Health Insurance Society details, physical description and his service number.
Is there any additional information that might be available from merchant navy records in the UK? I am specifically seeking to establish name/s of next of kin at that time period. Advice from RC members would be appreciated

The Common Room / Children placed in Home/s 1891 to 1903
« on: Monday 07 December 09 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am uncertain where to place this topic.
I have a brick wall with my late grandfather. He was born in Peckham Camberwell in 1903 - I have his birth certificate and (eventually) tracked his parents marriage certificate. He did not know his parents (and siblings) as he was fostered out at an early age.
It turns out there were 5 children - probably born over 1891 to 1903 in the London area. Two children lived with their grandparents from about age 1 to age 16 - I now have their details. It seems the three other children (including my late grandfather) were "placed in homes" when young - two of the three died.
The family (?) lived in the London area - Camberwell, Woolwich, West Ham, East Ham, Greenwich and (possibly) Paddington in Westminister.
The UK census records have not been helpfull in tracking/co-locating the parents.
It seems that formal adoption processes were introduced in the UK sometime in 1927.
My question/s to RC members is where do I start to search out records of placements of children in orphanages or other institutions over 1891 to 1903 in the London area. My gut feeling is that "placed in homes" was a formal process rather than say an informal one of the 3 children being placed with relatives or friends.
Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Young Girls Attire - From which decade?
« on: Monday 23 November 09 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I had posted this topic late last night, but cannot see it on my posts. Late nights no longer agree with me.

The attached photo was passed down to me from my deceased grandfather. There is no identification (such as photographer, date, location etc) on the photo. It shows 2 young girls (in England) who maybe his foster sisters.
I am trying to identify the girls attire to a decade - it looks like 1920s to me but it could be earlier. Can RC members help?

I am having difficulty in reading the occupation description of my ggggrandfather on his son's 1880 death certificate extract issued by New South Wales BDM Registry (Australia). Both son and father have the same name.
In the column name and occupation of father is William Henry Walker. However, the two hand written words for occupation are not clear. I think it may be a location i.e. the first word is "Place". The second word defeats me entirely. If a location, then it is possible it is somewhere in Scotland.
Attached is a cut down of the certificate extract.
Any help from RC members would be helpfull. Thanks.

Armed Forces / Royal Marines - Discharge in 1869 - COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 06:43 GMT (UK)  »
(1) I have obtained an ancestor's attestation papers from the National Archives. He served in the Royal Marines from June 1864 to March 1869. His papers are hand annotated:

D. Free on Red at Wo

(2) The "D. Free" is probably Discharge as Free - this is consistent with the record summary displayed on the NA website.

(3) The word "Red" has a mark (which I cannot read) at the top and to the right of the letter d.  Maybe a small ink blob?

(4) The o in "Wo" is underscored and the W might be an M or N. Its hard to read.

(5) Can RC members take a guess on what the handwritten annotation abbreviated discharge means.

(6) I've noticed from the attestation papers that the ancestor enlisted for 12 years service. Also, he married in 1867.

Thanks.

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Luxulyan - Sarah WELLINGTON Birth - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 16 October 09 10:37 BST (UK)  »
I have looked at the Cornwall OPC but cannot find a birth at Luxulyan in the correct time period for Sarah Wellington.

In the 1841 UK census Sarah is shown as age 20 and in the 1851 UK Census shown as age 38 born at Luxullian.

This would place her year of birth at around 1813 to 1821 which is a 7 year range.

I have had one very helpful RC source (Jack Hayes) who indicates Sarah's birth at Luxulyan in 1921 to parents Richard (father) and Ann (mother).

I am seeking to try and resolve the 7 year issue and eliminate the possibility of my tracking two different Sarahs.

PS - some additional comments after the initial posting above
In 1841 UK census Sarah is in Parish of St.Sampson
In 1851 UK census Sarah is married to John Lobb of Broadoak

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Cornwall - "Wellingtonia"
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 13:11 BST (UK)  »
What is "Wellingtonia" as a family history reference/source for Cornwall (England) births, deaths and marriages?

Sorry - just realised that my question should be more approriately posted to Cornwall Resources
