I think this is how it worked -

On marrying an alien, Ellen would lose her British nationality (assuming that she was ever British).

If her alien husband became a British subject, this would extend to Ellen as his wife.

If Ellen was the widow of an alien, Ellen would apply for naturalization.

I am assuming that you have no way of knowing where Maisie was before her name appears on a photo labelled 1920.

Do you have this photo, and can you please scan both sides.

I am assuming that you have no way of knowing where Maisie was before her name appears on the electoral roll, 1922.

You have no way of knowing if Maisie ever believed herself to be born into the NICOL family.

You need to get some idea of when, and the extent to which, the NICOL family identified Maisie as one of their own, and Maisie identified herself........beyond names on certificates.

Is Maisie a witness on a marriage certificate of a sibling?

Does Maisie name a child after a sibling?

Do her siblings name a child Maisie?  Did the GALE family have close contact with families of NICOL siblings?

None of this is conclusive, but it would help to see how Maisie sits in this family.

The Will for Margaret NICOL d. 1944, if it names children, how are they named, and when was this Will written.

Cousin Horace SYMONS is witness at Maisie's marriage.

What do you know about Horace, and the SYMONS family?

The fact that Maisie's daughter did not know that her mother Maisie was not the daughter of Alexander NICHOL does not mean that Maisie herself did not know.

You have identified the Will of Phyllis Olive WOOD, d. 1988, as the event that disclosed Maisie's place in the NICHOLS.

Are you saying that the Will of Mary Louisa Gibb d. 1934 was also a source of information about Maisie?.

How old is Maisie in the photos you have of her?

"..Family squabble over substantial will, it is told to Maisie's children "she wasn't really a Nicol, she was a foundling"

I probably assumed it was the Will of Margaret NICHOL d. 1944.

Was it the Will of aunt Elizabeth BOLTON, d. 1952, age 86 (b. ~ 1866), and married late in life -

"I cannot believe that Maisie would have gone her whole life not being told by SIX older siblings!"

How do you know that Maisie was unaware that Alexander NICHOL was not her father?. It is very difficult to confirm a negative.

If the will of Margaret NICHOL, d. 1944, produced resentment about Maisie's place in this family, do you mean that this was the first that Maisie knew about her origins?

Where was this family living 1900 - ~ 1915, years of formal education for Maisie and the NICHOLS siblings?. You might be able to access school records to find her.

Do you have any photos of Maisie and of the NICHOL family to see if there is any family resemblance?

Can you direct me to the 1921 electoral listing for Maisie......address, electorate...exact name.

If Maisie is born 15 Apr 1900, she would enrol to vote ...early 1921. Just an observation, but I wonder if that enrolment would be recorded and processed for inclusion in printed listing for the same year?.

At age 28, Maisie is two years older than husband William George GALE at marriage, 1928.

It might be worth considering that Maisie is older than 28, and cut a few years off her age so as to reduce difference in age to husband.  Human vanity, but you see it quite often in the days when you did not need to show proof of identity.

What was the estate of Margaret NICHOL, d. 1944?.  Have you seen this will?.

What is the source for the birth date, 15 Apr 1900, for Maisie?

Can you please be specific about the information you are offering.

Who are the six siblings?

"..One sister, the second girl"    Who is this....name, and married name please.

"There is no doubt she is not fully related."   Why do you have no doubt about this?

"..We aren't sure."    Not sure of what?

Can you name the uncle and sister (painful research).

"...The mother had no mother herself and while all her siblings go back to live with the father she doesn't."   What does this mean...who are the mother, the mother, the father and the siblings?

Apart from the marriage certificate, 1928, what is the earliest evidence you have of Maisie being in the NICHOL family.......photos, letters etc.

Do you have the marriage certificate, 1928?  If you have this certificate, can you please list all the information on it.
