Hello,
A death notice for Robert Gibbard Bennett in the Adelaide Advertiser 3 Jun, died 1 June 2009 age 80 years. Something else 5th Jun for him as well. Might be the son of Albert - encourages your S.A suggestion.

Hello Jen,
The newspaper site will bring up the two items and I have included the NSW BDM site.

At this page use "the exact phase" with Hauswell and tick the Victoria box for newspaper selection further down the page. The search button is at the bottom of the page.

Australia / Re: HAYES Jacob Henry and SMITH Ann of Tasmania, Australia

Hello,
If Jacob Henry Hayes died in 1936 in Hobart there is a good chance that he will be in an undertakers records and that has space for place of birth, which should be a big help. Hold on a few days until I can check - Tas. cert. are expensive and take a long time to arrive.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Emigration: New Zealand to Australia early 1900s

Hello,
I am assuming that you do not know that this man died in Victoria, and a Victorian death cert. will give you the information that you want - has provision for place of marriage, names and ages of all children, name of spouse, years in the state plus other states of Australia.

Victoria BDM
Ernest Hauswell Bennett d. 1939, parents Frederick Jabos Bennett and Ellen Short

The death cert. would cost you $17.50, downloadable to view at
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-earch?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria.

Wife Elizabeth d. in 1956, so she would have given the information for the death cert. - best source.

I don't know if you have any of this -
BDM NSW
Mercia Elizabeth Bennett d. 1964 St Leonards, Sydney parents Alfred Ernest and Elizabeth Mary.
Cora Kaye d. at St Leonards and she was Cora Bennet m. Clarence O Kaye 1922, Sydney. Her parents are Ernest Hauswell and Elizabeth Ann.

Ernest is mentioned in the Melbourne Argus newspaper  1929, a fishmonger opening a herbalist shop so you might find him in the Melbourne Post Office Directory.

Also,
Widowed women usually go to live with an adult daughter, so if you are lucky you might find a widowed mother with a family in the census. But this needs more information ie. indication of location - where is this family and what details are on census records you have looked at.

Hello,
An opinion for what it is worth - the two women definitely look alike - mouth and nose. I am not seeing a similarity between the two men at the back of the photo which might just be the extremes of facial expression - animated and serious. But I think the man with the cap, and the man in the centre front row look alike.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with handwriting

Hello,
It might be Flax Mill Worker, and Engine attendant Flax Mill - knowledge of local industries might support this idea. I think the painter job might be (tin). The street name looks to start with "S", same as street, and maybe three or four letters, which might be possible to narrow down from a local street directory.

Cheers

What is the connection between your Thomas Scott and Canberra, Australia - was it a last known address or something? Were your father's parents married - would Thomas have been able to legally marry in Australia? What sort of age could Thomas he - when was your father born?
