The Common Room / Family Wise - a 'heir hunters' type firm?
« on: Tuesday 31 March 20 15:00 BST (UK)  »
A friend of mine has received a letter from a firm called Family Wise concerning a first cousin, once removed who died intestate last year.

Has anyone had any experience of this firm? It seems legitimate but I said I'd check with Rootschatters.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Marriage at St Anne, Soho, Westminster
« on: Wednesday 18 March 20 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a marriage on FindMyPast which might be one I've been looking for, but FindMyPast don't have the original to view.

I wondered if anyone had access to the PRs for St Anne Soho, Westminster and could tell me if there is any additional information given. The marriage is:-

2 June 1715  James Mitchell and Mary Hemmings.

I'm hoping for some mention of the couple's residence or a connection to Buckinghamshire, specifically the Eton area.

Jill

Technical Help / CD Drive on new Desktop PC - HELP!!
« on: Tuesday 17 March 20 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
Another hitch with my new PC. I'm tearing my hair out here - I deliberately bought one that said it had a CD Drive which I tried to use for the first time today.

The slot on the front comes out okay, though you have to pull it out after its opened a bit. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how you load the CD itself. My old PC was an Acer and that had a nice plastic 'holder' to fit the CD into but this - its nearly all metal and has a curved plastic area at the bottom which you'd think would be where you're supposed to insert the CD but it just falls out again! Its driving me demented!!

What am I doing wrong?

The Stay Safe Board / State of Emergency, Coronavirus (part 2)

Moderator Comment: We've created a new topic so that you can discuss the COVID19 Coronavirus

I did my regular online Tesco shop at the weekend but couldn't get a delivery slot before next Monday. I haven't ordered anything over and above what I usually get but I am beginning to wonder , when it arrives, just how many items are going to be marked 'unavailable' because of these selfish morons?

I'm sure there are still plenty of decent people out there but I do wonder how many would swear at you and elbow you out of the way to get to the last pack of pasta even if they already have 10 packets at home in their cupboard?!!

I know supermarkets are doing their best to counteract these idiots. May I suggest that a good way to shame them might be to use the shop's cctv to film their behaviour and then post it online?  Finally, a good use for social media!

Technical Help / Speakers humming!!
« on: Monday 09 March 20 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
I 'hid' this request for help in another thread and was worried I wouldn't get any specific replies, so have opened this new thread.

I have a new PC with built-in speakers which are very tinny, so I've tried replacing them with my old speakers (very old but still working fine up to about a week ago when I got the new PC).

I now have a problem in that the old speakers are making a humming noise as soon as they're plugged into the mains. It doesn't matter whether they are actually switched on or off - the humming sound is there until I pull the plug out of the electric sockets. Its an annoying noise and I can't leave it like that - I will be measured up for one of those cardigans with the long sleeves that tie at the back if I do!!

Any ideas? The separate speakers are old but they never made that noise when I used them with my last PC (only a week ago!).

They really do make a difference in comparison to the built-in variety so I would really like to get them working properly.

Technical Help / Amazon Prime Music
« on: Friday 06 March 20 16:29 GMT (UK)  »
I subscribe to Amazon Prime and they're forever emailing me to tell me I'm not taking advantage of Amazon Music which is supposedly included in the sub. My understanding is that its not free (you have to pay per tune downloaded) and also that you can't sync it to an ipod. Am I right?

It hasn't bothered me up until now as my PC was too old even to continue buying tunes from iTunes. I'm hoping to resume downloading now I've finally got a new PC and I'm on Windows 10.

Obviously, I'd prefer to download from Amazon Prime if its free but can't seem to establish if it is actually free?

I'm wondering if anyone else has experience of Amazon Music via Amazon Prime and can enlighten me?

Technical Help / New PC - help with docs transferred from old PC
« on: Friday 06 March 20 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have finally replaced my 10 yr old PC with a new one.

I got someone to transfer my old docs to the new machine but have hit a snag. The chap who set it all up for me has loaded Apache Open Office which is a new one on me. I've just made amendments to an old document and have received a message saying I need to activate Word (all my old docs are in Word) before 9 March or - presumably - lose access to the old docs.

When I clicked on 'activate' I have to open a Microsoft account and it seems that I have to pay for the privilege! I never had to subscribe to it on the old PC! It doesn't mention a cost.

I'm hoping someone will advise me what to do. Can I 'convert' my several old Word docs to function under Open Office - or am I snookered?

Trying not to panic, Mr Mainwaring!!!
