Technical Help / Re: CD won't work - HELP!
« on: Friday 27 October 06 14:41 BST (UK)  »
Sorry folks - I had to walk away from it for half an hour cos it was steaming up my glasses!

Downside, I managed to uninstal it using your second suggestion - no uninstall file in programme files! the bad news is that I installed it again and it did exactly the same - re installed itself and kept telling me to insert the CD when it was already in!

Biker, No it's a read only CD. It's the Buckinghamshire Posse Comitatus 1798 and is really just a searchable list of men and parishes aged 16 to 60 who were available if the French invaded. It worked when I first installed it but not after that.

It's beginning to look as if I'll have to drum up the courage and contact the company who produce it - there is an email address. Do you think they'll take any notice if I ask them to reply in English and not computerese?!!   ::)

Why do I always feel as if I'm mentally subnormal when I have PC problems?

Meles,
Where is the uninstall button? When I click on the icon, the CD just opens and goes through the usual 'insert the CD' rigmarole.

Falkryn,

Tried that and it worked in as far as it didn't autorun but the same thing happens when I click on the icon in Programmes.  perhaps I've got a faulty CD?  but it worked fine to begin with!

Technical Help / CD won't work - HELP!
« on: Friday 27 October 06 12:19 BST (UK)  »
I have a data CD - I won't say where I got it from but it was a reputable firm.

It worked fine when I first got it but now I can't get it to behave!

First, is it right that it insists on installing itself (through its wizard!?) every time? i thought you did that to begin with and then just clicked on the icon to open it?

Anyway, I go through this installation rigmarole every time I try to get into it. Then when I'm finally in and enter a name and hit the search button , a small window pops up and tells me there's been an error and would I please insert the CD. Trouble is - it's already inserted!! I know where I'd like to insert it!  :-X

I've tried taking out the CD and inserting it again but no luck!

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Only PLEASE assume that I am about 6 years old when explaining things because if you start talking computerese, you'll lose me after the first sentence! This is why I haven't contacted the company I got it from because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't understand the instructions!    :-[ :-[

Pathetic, I know!

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Wooburn Baptisms - JARVIS
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 16:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure how far back the Wooburn PRs go back, but if anyone has access to them I'd appreciate a look up for the baptism of

THOMAS JARVIS (Jarvice etc)

in about 1655-75

hopefully with a father named Walter!

Thanks

Berkshire / Re: Snell in Bucklebury

Hi Newburychap,

I hope you don't mind if I bother you for another Bucklebury look up.

I've got Eleanor/Ellen Goddard bp 1679 in Bucklebury d/o Henry & Eleanor.

Are there any siblings and any sign of Henry & Eleanor's marriage or respective baptisms?

Thanks
Jill

The Common Room / Re: What parish does this say?
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi Cas,

With your help - by George, I think I've got it!

It was with you saying Purley that made me think of Hurley. If you look at the 'H' at the start of 'Henry' 4 lines above, I think 'H' is the first letter of my mystery parish. I would never in a month of Sundays thought of it starting with a 'H' without your suggestion of Purley. I've also learned something else - the only Purley I knew of was the one in London.

Thanks again,
Jill

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Almondbury Baptisms & Marriages
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Dave,

You're very welcome.

The title page on the Baptisms booklets is Almondbury parish Church but that on the Marriages booklets is Almondbury All Hallows.
