Mmm, very confusing ::)

1861 Census
RG9/574/50/7

James IZZARD, 39, head, unm, stone ?, Rotherfield
Joel ..., 21, brother, unm, stone ?, Rotherfield
Maria.., 63, Mother, housekeeper, Rotherfield
MARGARET IZZARD, cousin, 17, unm, servant, born Rotherfield

So to be cousin to head of household Margaret would have to be the daughter of one of his Uncles? Therefore his Fathers brother/sister?

Unfortunately 1841 delivers little as relationships not shown.

1841 Census
HO107/1117/11/Rotherfield

Jesse IZZARD, 50, Ag lab
Maria, 40
Phoebe, 20
Jesse, 20
James, 19
Job, 14
Jasper, 12
Helen, 8
John, 4
Joel, 1
William, 1##
All born in county

Is William aged 1 the William Izzard/Ipard who appears aged 11 in 1851 Census?

Therefore who is the parent of William and Margaret?
As I said very confusing ???

Possible birth for Margaret;
Margaret ISARD
December 1843
Uckfield 7 463

Trish :)
Thankyou for this. On the ancestry, could be me! but will check.
As for "James IZZARD, 39, head, unm, stone ?, Rotherfield" this could be either stone deaf or stone breaker as I have come across this before. :)

The IGI shows this extracted christening:

Harriet Slater
28 Oct 1866 Hartfield, Sussex
Parents Obadiah Slater and Martha

I'm wondering if Martha is a mistake and should read Margaret because I can't see a marriage for Obadiah Slater to Martha, but there is a marriage

Obadiah Slater - Margaret Izzard
5 Dec 1865 Hartfield

Also a death in Mar 1869 in East Grinstead for an Obadiah Slater age 28
That is what I was thinking, as it is the right date and place - just the name is wrong.
Just a "typo" on the name then?
I thought Daughter-in-law might mean stepdaugther, but was unsure. :-[

Indeed! (Don't know why I didn't think of looking for Clara in the first place!)

1891
RG12/678 142 23
Tunbridge Wells, Kent
St John's Road

William T Saunders, head, 56, (something) Carriage Proprietor, b. Sussex Awing??
Susan, wife, 48, b. Cambridge Gontan?
Clara J Thurston, stepdau, 19, Dress Maker, b. do.

She's still around in 1901 and 1911 :D
Thankyou for this. I should have done the same - looked for Clara - and it makes more sense that she did not move out to Ashford

P.S. "Gonton" I have "giston"  :)

I am researching the Wheatley family (my grandmothers family).
On the 1881 census is - James Wheatley (born Hartfield) and wife Margarett (born Rotherfield) with daughters Alice, Annie and Ellen with son James.
However, there is also a  Harriett Slaker Daughter-in-law, scholar, age 14!
Were is her husband? (at this time girls COULD legally marry at 14) as James the son is only 4.
Or, as this was Margarett's "2nd marriage", was Harriett her Daughter and this was there way of showing that Harriett was "not of Wheatley blood".
Margarett's first marriage was to "an unknown". :-\

John Ready Thurston and his family came from Cambridge to Tunbridge Wells in 1830/40's.
John was my Great x2 grandfarther and was a 'brick and tile maker' who lived in the St John's area where there was a brickyard at that time.
John died in September 1881 age 43 - where would he be buried? he is not in the Woodbury park cemetery (this has been fully listed) and was this an accident?
His wife Susan according to the free BMD remarried in September 1882 (Tunbridge 2a 988) and then died in 1884 age 45 in W. Ashford.  There are 2 possible husbands - William Townsend and Albert Sparrowhawk, but which one did she marry? :-\
