Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Lack of Ancestry DNA Matches
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi, update on this subject!

Just to confirm that I am getting relatively few new matches, since the ethnicity upgrade was released (and new matches were held back for a couple of weeks at least, 'til then), and literally none over 20cM. Vast majority are 10 or under, without trees and with no matches to other family lines.  On my tree I have been down pretty far thru' my list (as well as coding all 8/7/6's last year, when the changes took place), marking matches, but I am still finding very few with joint matches of any kind.

Same for my Dad's & Cousin's match list, though I have not put in quite as much work on them!

Is everybody else the same??  My cousin mentioned recently that she had an Ancestry test to do, and she would be my only 1st cousin on my paternal line who has tested, so I am desperate for that to come through, and thats what is keeping me involved, as for me there is currently so little to  keep me interested, that is until Scotland's people (in Edinburgh) opens again, and I can attack my long list of 'recent' queries, which I can only resolve on site, due to being within the 100 years rule.

Not trying to outdo anybody, but mine are even less impressive!

To Summarise:-
Old Ethnicity
Irish 79%
Scottish 21%

New Ethnicity
Irish 80%
Scottish 20%

All that for a '1% swing'!!  Though to be fair, I think that my estimates were and are likely fairly accurate, being, probably, nearly 100% Irish, but the Irish from the Ulster counties of Derry/Antrim/Tyrone etc., being pretty indistinguishable from those from Southwest/Cental Scotland, due to  the mass movement from Ireland to Scotland in the 19th century, as well as movement back and forward for a millenium or two!!

However, without a doubt I am underwhelmed!

Yes me too!  But when I uploaded to My Heritage, I was lucky enough to pay a flat fee ( not much, possibly £25),  and I have access to all my match details (as far as I am aware!) and available DNA tools, without paying for a monthly/yearly contract!  I dont know if they still do that?  Perhaps they do it on occasion, inorder to up their customer numbers??

I am sure I read in the launch advice that the match dates would change, but would revert back after a period, I assume when all things settle down. Additionally, my lists are currently changing  regularly, as have the maternal/paternal linked matches and their numbers, I expect this will settle back shortly ( I may be being stupidly optomistic!).

However, it has to be said that before the update, I had a total of 893 matches (my dad had 7389), which I always thought was strangely low, but now it is 5865, up 1 from yesterday! I do find that very strange!Equally, My Dads was as above before update, was down to 1300 yesterday, and last time I checked was just under 6,000, I cant check for an uptodate figure, as the system seems to be down for maintenance!!

Yes, as others have said, the match figures ( and paternal/Maternal match numbers),are going up and down quite a bit! Hopefully it will settle down soon, so we can make comment on the stable new version.

On assigning relationships, I believe the situation was like this before, in that they want you to have that person/put that person in your tree.  I think this is partly in order to use those details to try to phase your matches to your maternal &/or paternal sides.

For me the matches seem better, a lot of my top matches were unknown to me and didn't seem to reflect a close link in my tree/genealogy.  Those seem to have disappeared ( well, probably moved further down my list), due to under 6cm segmeents being subtracted from the total cM figure for each match.  This I find helpful.  Known matches are now much nearer the top of my list, and this makes me more confident that the high matches that I have not been able to trace yet, are likely to be real matches.

Any way, I will maybe review how the up date has improved FTDNA, or not, as the case may be! ;), when it has settled down.

My Dad's account is updating, and I've just checked - so is mine. Looks more intuitive, though somewhat confused as in my account, the total number of matches was 893 - now it is 5684 (!!!!$£%!!!!). And just to confuse, My Dad's was 7389, and is currently at about 1300?? Dont think it has finished mind you, so I should just be patient and check again tomorrow!

I have to say that, at least initially, I am somewhat underwhelmed by my results, by which I mean re my match list.  2 close cousins top my list, two 1C1R's who I dont personally know, but obviously know of and have met/spoken to before.  However other than that there are 8 2nd cousins including 1 & 2removed ones, one group of whom may be from a known New York based branch, but whose surnames I recognise, even if I dont know which bits of that branch they come from.  But appart from that there are few I have any idea about!!

I guess it is hard, as I dont have my Dad's results here to seperate maternal and  paternal matches, but at first looking, I have noticed that 1 match I am sure is paternal, has a shared match with me from what I think likely to be my female side. I know this obviously can happen, but in my much larger Ancestry database, I have only one example of a maternal match, who has a paternal joint match (or vice versa!).

However I will plough on and see If I can discover anything interesting!!
